If I understand your question correctly, the technical answer your looking for is three. Although its all one connected system of the lower intestine, the segments of your lower intestine are defined as three sections of your colon. in order of direction of chyme travel (food being digested) the Acending colon is the first, beginning at the end of the small intestine near the bottom of the stomach area and going straight up. The Transverse colon is next, heading across the top of the abdomen, and the decending colon is the last of the three, coming down from the transverse and aimed straight into the anus for defecation. enjoy your colons!

You have only one colon but it is divided into the ascending, transverse and descending. It goes up, over, down and out.
