Hard boiled:
Place egg in pan, cover with about 1inch water, heat on high until water boils, remove from heat, wait about 20 minutes, peel and enjoy egg.
Soft boiled:
same method, wait 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 minutes depending on how soft you want your boiled egg.

Not as easy question as many will think.
If you store your eggs in the refrigerator - remove them at least one half hour before cooking until it thoroughly comes up to room temperature.
If you don't the eggs will split and sprew the contents all over in the pan!
here are two ways you can boil eggs.
1. Place the eggs in sufficient water to cover them in your pan and turn on the heat to medium. In 15 - 20minutes your eggs should be hard boiled because it will take at least this long to bring the water temperature up to where the eggs will be cooked.
2. Bring sufficient water to cover the eggs to a slow rolling boil - then insert the eggs by using a tablespoon.
Boil the eggs for at least five minutes (or less then that if you want "soft boiled eggs" - 3 minutes for small eggs, and 4 minutes for large or jumbo sized eggs. I usually soft boil my eggs for 4 minutes as a personal preference) - then place under cold water after slightly cracking the shells which will stop the shells from adhering to the egg that is inside of it.
Bon Aperitif!

Use cold water and cover the eggs completely. When comes to a boil time it for 10 minutes. Drain hot water off the eggs and put cold tap water in with the eggs and let set for at least 5 minutes. The cold water on the boiled eggs will make it easy to remove the shell.

I agree with everyone with the bring them to a boil and let them sit off heat for 20 minutes or so for hard boiling. But I also put a little bit of white vinegar in the water to help prevent the eggs from cracking in the water and it also makes them easier to peel. The vinegar doesn't flavor the eggs at all if you just use a little.

To cook the perfect egg, follow these steps.
-Pierce the eggs on one end with a pushpin. This prevents the eggs from exploding while cooking
-Place the eggs in the bottom of a large pot. Avoid iron cookware, as that will encourage the formation of the green skin.
-Cover the eggs with cold, clean water.
-Put the pot on the stove and heat until boiling.
-Once the water reaches a rolling boil, lower the heat and set the timer for 12-15 minutes, depending on your altitude. Higher altitudes require slightly longer cooktimes for eggs.
-After the time has elapsed, cool the eggs immediately. ---Either lift them out into icewater, or run the cold water faucet into the pot for a minute or two to flush out the boiling water.

For perfect hardboiled eggs - place eggs in a pot with enough cold water to cover about 1 inch - turn on the flame set timer for 20 minutes immediately after timer goes off put pot in the sink and start running very cold water over the eggs. Keep in cold water bath until cool/cold to the touch - this method pretty much guarantees perfect hard boiled eggs - I know that is the way I've done them for many, many years.
