Religion in China is different than in the West. Because of its 5,000 year history, religious teachings, philosophical teachings, and ancient traditions all mix together. The Central Government does recognize several religions including Buddhism, Christianity and Islam. It is legal to belong to one of the recognized religions, but proselytizing is illegal and only atheists may join the Communist Party.
The reality is many people in China are religious, but 'with Chinese characteristics'. We have to take care not to judge the spirituality of a people according to our own culture and history. In my 13 years here I have found the Chinese people to be, for the most part, very pure-hearted.

There are adherants of many faiths in China. Officially however it is an athiest country.
Daoist (Taoist), Buddhist, Christian 3%-4%, Muslim 1%-2%
There are also a few Muslim tribes in China (the Hui and the Uyghur are two I know of). There is a story about a beautiful woman known as Iparhan (there are various spellings of this, also look up the "Fragrant Concubine"). There are various versions of the story, however she was a Muslim girl who was promised to marry an Emporer during the 17th century. It's a fascinating story, and while it's mostly believed mythical, it's also believed to be based on a true story. This has also been represented throughout many plays, books, and films.
Many people have said she was buried in Kashgar (which was in actuality a Sufi (form of Islam) shrine.
I realize this isn't only about religion and is mostly about Islam, but it's a fascinating story!

Communism forbids any kind of religion. So what is the reality? Reality is that lots of people hold all sorts of different beliefs and nobody will ever know the truth. Period.
