there are several that ive tried and watched.

the best ones are:
--create an old lady with a felt body and head and for a stomach use a large sturdy ziplock bag (that is also the storage for the whole story)and then with felt make the other animals.

--have the children choose one or two of the characters that they would like to be and then help them make puppets or other versions of them. or even allow themselves to act out the story as each item in turn

--its also always fun to try to read several different versions of the story so the children that different authors have different versions of what they want the characters to look like.you can also look for other books like "the mitten" which have the same type of story line

--one yr i had the chldren use a sock(as a stomach) you can even use different size socks and then allow the children to see how many different animals or other items they can put in the sock.

let your imagination run wild.
