I had the same problem with a kitten we got. I asked my vet and she said to get a spray bottle and fill it with water. I got one at a dollar store. She said you almost have to carry it with you at first. Anytime the cat scratches or bites you spray it. It doesn't take long for the cat to learn not to do it. Now, all we have to do is show our cat the spray bottle and he stops. We also use it if he gets on the table or counter. It hasn't broken him from getting on there but he jumps down as soon as he sees one of us with the spray bottle. It's just water so it won't hurt the cat. My vet said it works on most cats because most cats don't like getting wet. Every now and then you come across a cat who doesn't mind getting sprayed with water but most don't like it, so it's worth trying.

Use human fingernail clippers and clip his nails regularly. No, this won't prevent the scratching, but it sure prevents the injury! I've gotten kittens to stop by holding them down gently in a submissive position until the become more calm. This works, but it's MUCH easier if their little nail are clipped and they are ripping you to shreds while you do it! Rethink the declawing - especially on the hindquarters. While I'd rather have a declawed cat in a loving home than a cat with claws in a shelter, it is a rough surgery and should only be a last resort! Good luck.

declawing should be a last resort. The kitten is just playing, their freaks ha ha ha I have one right now 6 weeks old we found her at the beach, and she's a spaz! you need to inform your child that it needs to leave the kitty alone....(I have three young kids) the kitty will go the child when it's ready, when it wants too. I noticed my kitten strached alot too,my kids where mauling it. Took to the vet for a full work up,she's a happy normal kitten...words out of the vets mouth...KITTENS ARE FREAKS! ha ha ha I had to chuckle.
and they infact just grow out of it. You can also try a squirt gun.

Cats and kittens will also scratch and bite when they are playing and acting out their hunting instincts. But eventually they will grow out of it. I had a cat that would scratch and bite me hands all night. My new kitten of about 7months did it too for about two months. Again, they'll grow out of it.
