I remember when all the bad press was focused on crack. now i see its a meth scare? is it bad everywhere in the U.S. or just in parts? Ive even seen whole shows on discovery channel about "functional" meth addicts...they were docs, nurses, housewives etc.

I just moved (back home, 6 years away) to Louisiana, FROM Arizona, meth was HUGE probs in AZ, I get back here to find out it wasnt even really heard of when i left, now everyone switched from crack to meth! I also talked to my (DEA) uncle who said the price of meth in AZ is half what it is in LA, cuz its so new here, ugh.

It is everywhere! When I went to San Diego in the late 80's there were so many people on it, it was a joke. I moved back to Illinois in 1988, and nobody here even heard of it before. Now everyone in Illinois knows about it.

Meth started in the western United States and is progressively spreading across the country. A majority of states are currently effected with only the Eastern seaboard being largely meth free. If the trend continues, many leaders in the field believe, meth will be of pandemic proportions and the trend looks like it is going to continue. Currently, it is an especially big problem in the midwest. The prevalence of meth use in the United States has also seen an increase in child abuse and neglect cases coming out of meth homes. Very, very bad stuff!

I was a Court Clerk for 9 year. In our continuing education classes we were told (5 years ago) that if you throw a dart anywhere in Arkansas there will be a meth lab within 20 miles of the dart. It's worse now. It's cheap and easy to make.
I've seen what it does to people. Otherwise healthy people have dramatic weight loss, loss of teeth, and they age. I've seen men and women look 60 that are in their 20's. Funny thing women coming to court would brag about how much weight they lost, but smiling with missing teeth. They thought they looked good.
It's a highly addicted drug and with all the messed up stuff in it, it's just not worth the effects it has on a persons body and mind.

Crystal meth's availability is what makes it popular. Crystal meth is a drug that can be manufactured with easily obtainable componants and has a huge profit potential for those who manufacture and sell it. Most other drugs like cocaine, marijuana or opium have to be imported which is difficult and expensive. As supplies of the more traditional drugs dwindle or are interrupted, new drugs pop up to take their place.
Before you go run out and buy some though keep in mind that most meth labs are filthy, rodent and pest ridden places that produce a product that is just as likely to make you ill as make you high.
Fuctional addicts are rare. Most fall into the same traps as other hard drug users and turn to some criminal enterprise to keep their habit fed.

The very idea of "functional" doctors and nurses on meth is terrifying. Chrystal Methadrine is a frightening drug. It is made of common household ingredients but not from your kitchen but from your garage. Meth is fairly easy to make and can be made in a house or barn or anywhere where there is electricity. It is common to have it out in the middle of nowhere because it stinks when cooking but meth labs have been found in apartment buildings and garages all over the mid-west. At first meth makes a person feel good and energetic and able to accomplish a lot but then as it is used the person needs more and more. The user many times stops eating, sleeping only when body so exhausted it shuts down and sleeps. The exact cost in body and emotional stress is hard to determine but many addicts die from malnutrition, many have severe dental problems, vitamin defieciencies, severe withdrawal symptoms when suddenly taken off of it and the loss of self respect for all the things people will do to get more of it.

Crystal meth has been around since the 60's & probably before that. Meth was the drug being transported in the movie "Easy Rider" Like any other drug abuse gives it a really bad name, besides who wants to stay awake for 3 or 4 days at a time. Then cocaine came around & everybody started doing that. Coke gets you up for about 10-15 minutes & is way too expensive. Meth gets you up for 8-10 hours & is very cheap. If you want to be up why would anyone choose the expensive product over the cheaper longer lasting one?

Up & coming?? I'm orig from CA. Moved to WI 9 years ago to get away from it. 6 months after we moved here, meth labs were getting busted left & right. There's no such thing as a "functional" meth user (aka tweeker). The stuff is evil....God help anyone who's spun out on meth.

I work in the field. I can tell you that the trend started in CA in the 70's and has been very slowly progressing across the states. It is a problem now all the way to abot the Missippi river. The East coast still has crack-cocaine as a main concern. Eventually though as the recipes and popularity reach the East coast, it will become a problem here as well. It is cheaper, more effective, and easier to make than crack-cocaine. It is also more harmful and more addictive.
Ps - Why would I possibly get thumbs-down's for this answer?

It's everywhere, here in Iowa it's been a major problem from all of the anhydrous ammonia used to make it that's available for the fields. It was originally created back in the late thirties or forties by the scientists of Adolph Hitler, to be used by his troops to be invincible.
