Depends.

Most people with mental illness hold jobs, have friends & a place in a family. Many treatments today are still only palliative - they make the symptoms easier to deal with but the disease is still there. So from a certain point of view there isn't alot of effective treatment happening, even in 2006 in a "first world country".

Some mental illness gets better just through time. People can learn how their brain is malfunctioning & learn to compensate. It takes some patience, intelligent awareness & attention; also a little emotional support can go a long way.

For those people who do not have or cannot get these things, the answer is that they suffer with the problem. Some problems do even get worse with time - it just depends. But they never stop being human beings who are suffering, which is not really different from any of us who are not labeled as " mentally ill".

I have to disagree with many of the previous answers. Individuals with serious mental disorders that are not treated DO NOT usually end up committing a violent act. These cases are the rare exceptions. Mental illness doesn't usually follow the typical medical model where someone continues to get sicker and sicker until something breaks.

For example, the prevalence of depression in Americans is around 5-6% of the population. That's roughly between 15 and 18 million people! Trust me there are not 15 to 18 million people in treatment or in the prison system (I think it's roughly 3 million or so) for violent acts. People think that all individuals diagnosed with mental illness are dangerous and that simply is not the fact. Are there some, yes, but that population makes up a very small proportion of those with a mental health diagnosis.

As for the actual question posted...Individuals who are diagnosed with a serious mental disorder and do not receive appropriate treatment can have some very significant problems. Usually they end up in some sort of effective treatment eventually, whether its forced treatment through the criminal justice system or civil court system, or the individual finally realizes the need for treatment.

it mostly depends on what kind of mental disorder since theres a lot of different disorders. there are some where you can totaly tell that there's something wrong with the person, but there's some other ones that arent that bad but like everything if they're not treated the only thing that happens is get worse

i am bi polar and i have tried to get treatment since i was 12 (now 27) the medicines don't do anything but make me sleep all the time and the doctors don't really care about you wanting a normal life so i got fed up and decided with the help of my family to just live with my illness naturally. Yes I am a little moody from time to time and at times it is hell on my husband but all in all we are so much happier! The point I am trying to make is you can be "mentally ill" and still be a productive citizen...but you need to know your warning signs and have friends and family there to monitor you.

I'm not sure what qualifies as serious but I know someonw who can't keep a job with a check every week because of the things that come out of his mouth and the way he behaves. He has been homeless and has a way of making money legally under the table. His father is a successful banker! I pray for him.

There are several types of serious mental disorders, and usually untreated cases proceed to schizophrenia or die of or commit suicide. And if the become schizophrenic they become threat for the society or for themselves!
At last, one thing to note.. bookishly talking, every disease ends in death, if not treated !

They move on to become world leaders, ( seems like it doesn't it? )

Actually they can only make it for a shot time before they completely lose touch with reality, and become introverted and seek seclusion or flip and become violent. In both cases they will wind up dead or locked in a treatment facility.

Some get put in institutions. I saw one once; there almost like prisons. some institutions are basically storage places for people that can't function in society, or have serious disorders.
