We did that last year, although our cats aren't that old. We put their food bowls just on the opposite side of the door so they could see them. We also removed the little magnet that latches the door so it would be easier for them at first. I'm not sure if that would be a good idea for you though--ours was an indoor cat door, leading to the basement. I wouldn't unlatch an outdoor cat door. The other thing we did was occasionally we'd just push the cat through the door to show them that they could get through there.

when they stand at the door wanting out carry them over to pet door, hold it open and stick them out. after a few times they will get the idea. they might be scared the first few times bc they think they will hit the door or unsure if it will move, but after a while they will realize how it works and u wont have a prob.

I just installed mine and them put the cats through it a couple times and that was all it took.

I had to gently push mine through it a couple of times before they got the hang of it.

just show them where it is and how it works .do this a few times when they want out and they will figure it out from there
