The other day I was in the store and I see that they are selling fat free ½ and ½. I know one of the ½ is cream and in order to get cream it’s made from fat, does this really mean that they are just selling fat free milk at a much higher price?

You're usually a big jokester but I'm actually going to answer this question seriously. Half and half is half cream and half whole milk (you should know this being a Nebraskan!). I got this question all the time from customers when I worked at the grocery store and all I could think is "what a smartass!". It doesn't have gelatin in it, it has carageenan, which is basically seaweed. A better name for it would be "Fat free half and half-like substance" as obviously it's not actually half and half but instead meant to take the place of it in your coffee. I pour it right on my cereal, yummy!

I saw this the first time while in Oregon this summer. I was looking for the real thing and saw the fat free stuff. I couldn't believe it either. In fact I couldn't even find real cream, 6%, 10%....nothing.
I have never seen fat free 1/2 and 1/2 in Canada.

My husband works at a coffee shop and they have had fat free 1/2 and 1/2. It is not nearly as good as regular and it does not heat/foam as well as the regular either but the same can be said about fat free milk.

It's not real 1/2 and 1/2, just something made to taste thick and creamy. It has lots of fillers.

did you check the ingredients it probably has gelatine like most comercial yogurts to thicken it or possibly even starch.
