i have a rat terrier/chiwaawaa that sheds a lot.i have tried combs and brushes to groom her.it only pulls more hair out that doesn't stay on the brush.so i started vacuuming her with my vaccum cleaner.is there a small hand held type somewhere that would work better?

I have 2 toy fox terriers and they are like the rat terriers but smaller. They do shed but we put them on Iams and the shedding has decreased. I brush them maybe once a week also. If you bath them alot that can dry their skin out. Try a better brand of dog food. I have a friend who gave her dog those pills and it didn't hurt her but it didn't make much difference. I also have a yellow lab and she's 10 yrs old and her coat is really thick and she sheds so bad. I've tried everything on her but I have her shaved now. You can't even tell she's shaved and it helps alot with the shedding. But, she is an inside dog and I only get her shaved twice a year. Good luck and Happy Holidays!

as a groomer the best advice for this kind of dog is a greyhound comb and a trash bucket. the comb is very good at desheding short hair breeds its the only thing i use for it. i think the vaccuum scares the dog more than desheds it. its really cheap and even some grocery stores have it there

My groomer suggested that I switch to Nutro Max food with the lamb mix to stop my dog from shedding so much and it really worked. I know this was not exactly your question but it really helped me and saved my dog from being punished to live out side.

Equine catalogs sell grooming mitts of soft rubber with bumps that will remove and contain short hair. Your chihuahua will love it. (I paid $1.50 for my last ones.)
