igreatly appreciate all of your answers and thank you all for being so honest. The reason Muslim women cover their hair is modesty. The thought is that if you cover your hair and your body nothing is left to be shown but your personality. It is impossible for a man to see you as a sex object b/ he cannot see the things that men use to define a woman as sexy or not.
it is not a thing of oppression. i am not married. my family is not muslim. honestly, there are many people in my life that would prefer i did not where it. I am 100% American and i cover because i love what it does for my life. Covering is a personal choice that women make to empower themselves and allow for people only to see who they are at their cores.
(Even though this explanation was kind of long it is the readers digest version.... anyone interested in anything more in depth can please contact me)
Thank you all so much for your time
Asalamwalaikum

I'm planning to wear it soon, God willing, as it is ordered by Allah. Besides, it makes me feel really comfortable.

Because it's not a part of my religion, I would not wear one. But as far as women who do wear them, I don't have any feelings about it. I spoke to an American woman who wore the niqab as well and I asked her why she did. I was under the impression that women married to Muslim men were forced to do so by their husbands. I will admit to my ignorance. But I asked her and she told me that it was part of the religion. She didn't press the issue but she explained to me what I needed to know in order to understand why she wore the niqab. And she also told me that even though she converted to Muslim before marriage, it was she who wanted to wear the niqab. Not her husband.
So, everyone has a reason for doing things that they do. And in this country, that is their right. So who am I to think ill of what people wear?

Some women feel the hijab is necessary to maintain their modesty. That's all it is - there is nothing about a woman requiring the hijab in the Qur'an. A woman is to cover her breasts and her genitals and a man is to cover his genitals. That's the whole thing.
Women have a right to protect their modesty if they so choose, though, do they not?

I feel like they must be true to themselves their faith and their customs. It should not matter if a woman wants to wear a headcovering or not. If that is customary where she is from then she should do what she feels is right for her. This is America. You should be comfortable in the skin you are in and you have the right to wear what you want without being persecuted or laughed at.

i find this issue quite upsetting. i personally find women who wear niqabs quite frightening and have felt that way since i was a little girl. i personally feel that beauty of any kind should be on view, and that the purpose of niqab amongst muslim women has been forced upon them by insecure men, i do not agree that it is out of respect for women, if that was the case they could wear what they wished! but in the end it is down to beliefs and there is a lot of beliefs in this world that we must all accept and respect.

Scarves can be pretty. Why shouldn't people wear scarves? Sometimes it is just to cover a bad hair day.
As for being God's law to cover my hair (woman), I am not under law, I am under Grace. If I choose to wear a scarf over my hair, I will do so unto my Lord. If I choose to not wear a scarf, I will do so unto my Lord.

You keep one law you are holy. You keep all 613 Laws you are the holiest of the hollies, also known as the Saints of Yahweh.

I think it's quaint. And some of the scarves are nice. If they like doing that it's fine with me.
I think it makes the world a more interesting place when people are different.

I am OK with cultural or religious styles of dress. In fact, I think it is interesting and pretty. If we were all the same then how boring the world would be.
