Wild rice I believe... looks like little sticks? Oh wait, that's a different thing...

I think they are little pieces of pasta...

That's a tough one because rice pilaf recipes are almost as varied as there are the number of restaurants in existence! Like vegetable soup. beef stew,or chili, every chef/cook usually adds their own slight variations.

The brown pieces could be bits of sauteed mushroom, bits of meat, re-hydrated and sauteed dried onion flakes, or something else that you wouldn't even think of putting in a pilaf. Without seeing and tasting the version taht you're talking about, I really can't help.

As a chef for 30 years, my version uses white rice and diced onion sauteed in butter with a bay leaf or two until the onion is translucent. Rice/onion goes in a baking pan with water and chicken base, covered tightly and baked for 1hr and 15 minutes. Removed from oven and lfet to finish in the covered pan for another 15 minutes. Nothing brown in it. :)

You usually brown the rice in oil or butter before adding your liquid, so it could be the toasted rice.

well the rice is browned before its thrown in the rest so it might be from being fried up causing it?

I don't really know for sure.
