You should consider cutting the first 2 inches or so of carpet from the wall BEFORE you paint. This way when you can paint the very bottom of the baseboard. By doing this way, your freshly painted baseboard will be smooth and not have any old carpet material painted on to the baseboard. (You also need to vacuum the area between carpet tac-down stripe and the baseboard before you paint).

Definitely paint first - you may have to do a little touch up after the carpet is done, but that is a lot easier to control than a whole painting project on around new carpet.

Paint first. No sense in taking a chance in ruining the new carpet. You could put a drop cloth down, but nothing is guaranteed when painting. Get that out of the way first.

i would paint first and then carpet b/c u dont have to worry about spilled paint on the new carpet, u can paint the base boards w/o getting too close to carpets or worrying about a line, and dont have to worry about drop clothes everywhere.

Paint first, that way any slight over painting will not go on a carpet.

you paint always or you risk paint on your new carpet. old carpet should be cut and removed from the baseboard area for painting purposes. this gives you the opportunity to paint below the new carpet line. without having to walk on the pad or bare subfloor while you are painting

Paint first. Its easy to mess up your carpet if your painting. Unless you want little splotches all over the place. If you've already put down your carpet, then put plastic over it and tuck it close to the wall, so you don't spill.

I would say yes so you don't have to worry about getting paint on the new carpet, but if you are really carefull and don't spilll any or let any drops hit the new carpet it really wouldn't mater.
