On a recent ABC news clip, it seems many westerners are threatened or imtimidated by muslims wearing veils. why? Many westerners feel like it is a rejection of western culture. How is that so? Is'nt their right to express themselves religiously as it is ours to express ourselves religiously? why are so many americans(not all) so afraid of anyone who is different than them. I feel like if the KKK can wear their sheets and parade around town muslims can wear their veils. I just don't see what the big HOOHAA is about.

In that news clip, the journalist interchanged veil and hijab (headscarf). They are not the same thing.

Hijab is considered by many muslims to be an essential article of clothing, while all educated muslims agree that the veil is an additional piece that one chooses, not part of the religion.

From a western perspective, one can think of the hijab as a shirt, while the veil (niqab) as a hat. Most women would feel uncomfortable without a shirt. Most people don't wear hats unless their heads are cold, but some choose to. It is not illegal to wear a hat, but it is considered rude in some situations to keep your hat on your head (in church, during the pledge of allegiance, etc.)

The British question is regarding legislating the veil. It is their perogative and should be left to the voters, but my impression is that it is mostly political tongue-wagging. They should not, though, confuse the veil with the headscarf. That would be restricting women's rights to the freedom of religion, as many muslims feel they are not practising their religion fully without it.

In the US, if we start legislating the headscarf then what about nuns? what about the Amish? What about cancer victims who prefer to cover their hair? Jewish yamulkas? Cowboy hats? This country's strength is the mix of cultures that have contributed over the centuries. It was not so long ago that speaking Italian in the home was considered anti-American, and now some favorite American foods are speghetti and pizza! Is modesty so abhorrent that we should outlaw it? Mightn't the influence of a modest constituancy improve American culture, just as other groups have over the years?

I, for one, certainly prefer to see both women and men leaving something up to the imagination of the onlooker.

Well even in Islam you are suppose to veil out of choice. So if we are living in a civilized society then who the heck are v to tell what the other person can or cant' wear?

According to Chancer G, if middle aged religious veil shoul be outlawed, then so should the stone age like sleevless, 1/4 meter length dresses and pieces of cloth that barely cover your boobs and hips, and mini shorts the men wear be outlawed as well !!! After all those cave men kits are older than the veil, yet..... Y do ppl still wear them in the name of fashion ?!!??

I am an average american woman and I own 3 Outfits made in India that are absolutely beautiful and have the scarf thingy with them . I think you should dress how you are comfortable. If it is your religion to do so then be true to your faith. If it simply your desire to wear one, then be true to yourself. There is a lot of western culture that probably should be rejected if you really want the honest truth but you accept that when you live in a place with so many freedoms. It is a blessing and a curse all at the same time.

I'm not threatened by it all. In fact, I would feel more threatened if my country disallowed the wearing of the veil. I want my country to be a place that welcomes people of all religions. I think it is just a sign of modesty, and there's nothing wrong with it.

There are now court cases in the U.S. and other countries, that judges are demanding that muslim women remove their veil to testify. And many cases are now being thrown out because of refusal to remove the veil. The judges cited--that true credibility could not be determined without seeing the face of the person giving testimony. Any good body language book will confirm the same. Not only is it more difficult to lie face-to-face, it's also much easier to tell if someones lying face-to-face.

The way I figure it a woman as well as a man can slap a bomb on and kill a bunch of people and do all this with her veil on and nobody would be the wiser. What I can't figure out is why a person would do something so stupid, they call it religion, I call it murder and here in the US you get a nice needle in the arm for that.

I think people should have a right to wear what they want.

Unless it is to hide something that will take away others rights. Sometimes people want to hide bombs, etc. under baggie clothes. Also, in a court, body language (facial expressions) can reveal truth.

Sometimes a woman will cover her face because someone poured acid on her face. Or because her husband wants her to. Sometimes she just rather hide so guys won't lust for her.

Muslim women wearing face covering, this represents the secret face of Islam attempting to take over what was once our country. Hoodies are British Islam is not and we can easily deal with hoodies

Threatened? Heck no. Feel sorry for some of the ladies due to oppression? Yes. Hard to have a conversation with? Most definitely yes.

Why can't they remove when speaking face to face w/ someone, then put back on when in public.
