My flights to Australia aren't booked yet so I was wondering if you can still get your visa before you've booked you're flights. I would hate to book my flights first and then get turned down for a visa.

As soon as possible. My friend has just gone out there and when she applied for her visa she was told it takes 8weeks plus, hence she was delayed until this month even though she was supposed to start her job last month.

I'd get that sorted right now if I were you, also your flights - there's not much hope of a last minute cheap flight deal to Oz if that's what you're hoping for! In fact flights get more expensive the later you book them - that's if you can even get a decent flight with a decent carrier! Flights just prior to Christmas sell like hotcakes!
Your travel agent will be able to sort your visa for you when you book your flights.

Yep - you should do this right away. However, when I went I left for Asia and finally got it sorted about 3 weeks before I landed in Sydney. Best to do it now though.
I'm not sure if this money in your bank account is completely true - although I was of the same impression when I started travelling. Not once did I get asked in Australia about my funds - nor did my girlfriend who had far less than the reported amount you need.
On a big plus side - you can now work for 6 months in one job out there rather the previous 3. Have fun
