My pastor always pours a drink when we have our private counseling sessions. One for him and one for me. Is he really supposed to be doing this?

Now, Donna, you should know that whatever goes on between you and your pastor is fine with God. Fret not. You go, Girl!

Pastors may drink as long as they do so responsibly.Drinking during a counseling section is not doing so responsibly. It is a violation of the ethics of counseling. This should be immediately reported to the proper church authority,(bishop, church elders, senior pastor, etc).

He may be naive and completely innocent of wrong doing but he is certainly placing himself in a compromising situation and needs to stop.

Short answer...No!

Ask him, since he is supposed to be knowledgeable in the bible, where is the authority to drink alcohol so freely, and offer some to others.

Prov 20:1; 23:30-31; 1 Pet 4:3-4 (notice the word banqueting-it refers to the casual social drinking)

Also, Jesus did not turn water into alcohol (John 2), in case your "pastor" uses John 2 for his justification. Read Habakkuk 2:15. Jesus did not sin because he would not give intoxicating alocohol to make people drunk, or in the case of John 2, more drunk!

The only time God allowed the drinking of alcohol was for those who were at the point of death to ease the pain (Prov 31:6) and for medicinal purposes (1 Tim 5:23).

Well Alcohol isn't expressly forbidden. After all Jesus turned water into wine. You just are not supposed to be a drunkard. And if it makes the time go by quicker during the one on one ( no pun intended) session, have at it.

I wouldn't consider that appropriate for counseling sessions. At a party, then sure, our ministers will imbibe, but not during counseling.

Depends on the denomination. If you’re Southern Baptist, I’d say highly unusual. Many others see nothing wrong with a few drinks. I don’t believe any condone drunkenness or overindulgence.

Don't see why there would be anything wrong. Unless yous were getting drunk and having a go at it.

Even Jesus had wine. The idea is moderation.
