Single Lens Reflex cameras (both film and digital models) use mirrors to bounce the image from the lens to an optical viewfinder. When you press the shutter button, one of these mirrors slaps up, and a shutter curtain exposes the film or the sensor.
Other types of cameras include rangefinders, where you compose the shot through a separate lens - parallel to to the lens that captures the image on film, and digital point & shoots, which use Electronic ViewFinders.

A single lens reflex (SLR) camera uses a mirror to bounce the light of the incoming image from the lens into the viewfinder. With an SLR you are able to see exactly what the lens sees. This allows you to know exactly what will be exposed on the film or digital chip.
