Death is the opposite of life. There are many Scriptures that help us to see what happens to us when we die.
Animals and people experience the same thing as stated at Ecclesiates 3:19,20--"For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity. All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again."
Psalm 146:4--"His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish."
Eccl 9:5--"For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten." (This means that people still living cannot help those who die, they cannot reward them and eventually the memory of those who die are forgotten. They are not forgotten by God though for he holds all those who die in his memory and soon all will be resurrected back to life. The fact that we do not dwell on those who die is helpful so that death is not something thought about constantly, for if that were to happen, who could stand the pain of losing loved ones? God helps us to cope with our sadness this way. )
Eccl 9:10--"Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest."(This also helps us to see that the dead feel neither pain nor pleasure)
Death is likened to being asleep. Psalm 13:3--"Consider and hear me, O LORD my God: lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death." John 11:12-14--"Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well. Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead."
Because of Jesus sacrificing his life for us, death is a temporary condition and those who are now sleeping in death will be brought back to life here on earth. Jesus himself will do this-- "I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself. And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man. "Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out—"(John 5:25-29) NIV
I hope this helps you to see what the Bible teaches us regarding death.

The body dies but the spirit will either go to Hell or Heaven. If the spirit is not redeemed by the Lord Jesus Christ, the spirit will live eternally in Hell. That will be the second death as the Bible puts it. If you accept the free gift of Jesus Christ and His death, burial and resurrection, your spirit will have Eternal Life and Heaven. It is a choice.

The great mystery.
No one is 100% certain of what is after this life, the best we can do is hope that there is a reward for those of us that live a good life and for those that don't we hope they can learn from their actions.
Most faiths hold onto the fact that death is not an ending, just a change. Personally I agree with this idea but it is a matter of your faith as to what would come next.
Blessed Be )O(

Death is when your physical body dies, and your spirit either goes to Heaven or Hell for eternity.
You will not become an animal, or go to a place to be judged whether or not you were good enough on earth to make it to Heaven. Thank goodness!!
If you really want to know what death is, and what happens after... read God's Word. You've got all to gain and nothing to lose.

It amazes me how far people responing above, will warp their imagination to create a fantasy existence that will allow them to somehow cheat the finality of death. Death is the end.

Many people have many different definitions. According to the Holy Scriptures, death is the absence of life. It is total non-existence.

Something I wrote a few years ago:
An Eternal Dream.
What is death? Nought but a dream.
A vision of life; of what might have been,
Had we but listened to what was said,
But too late now, that we are dead.
‘Don’t drink too much’ a wise aside,
‘Or you will ruin your weak inside’.
‘And do not smoke’ was often spoke,
We treated those words as a joke.
‘Eat little and often’ was the wisest clue,
Of what we humans ought to do,
We fill ourselves with fat and lard,
Then wonder why our hearts are hard.
‘Fasten your seatbelts when in a car,
No matter that you’re not going far’,
‘Take exercise, you must keep fit’,
We jeered and laughed at the thought of it.
‘Don’t drink and drive’ came much too late,
It had to happen, it was our fate,
We had to race, all for that bet,
The only winner was – yes – death.

Death is when your brain breaks down. Your mind is a process running on the brain, just like a car function running on an engine or a computer program running on a computer. When the brain breaks down that process stops. You just cease to exist.

The life in this world is a test for the Hereafter. The Qur’an says in Surah Al Mulk: "He who created Death and Life, that He may try which of you is best in deed; and He is the Exalted in Might, Oft-Forgiving".
[Al-Qur’an 67:2]
