The theme of the final prayer delivered last week by a Christian pastor who was electrocuted during a baptism was, ironically, "Surprise me, God."
That disclosure came this morning on the national radio program, Coast to Coast AM, by Terry Esau, author of "Surprise Me, a 30-Day Faith Experiment," who had been invited to speak at the University Baptist Church in Waco, Texas.

During a service last Sunday morning, Rev. Kyle Lake was standing in waist-high water as he prepared to baptize a woman. When he reached for a corded microphone, the 33-year-old was jolted by electricity, and did not survive. The woman going to be baptized was unharmed.

The incident took place just minutes after the 800 members in attendance had prayed aloud, "Surprise me, God."

When asked if he thought the events were result of asking to be surprised, Esau, who witnessed the electrocution, said, "I wish I could answer that. I honestly, truly don't know. That gets you into all kinds of really, really hard questions. 'Does God cause everything to happen?' or 'Is there tragedy and chaos and stuff in the world because it's the natural consequences of humankind and our freedom of choice?'"

to a degree yes.... you see just like with any prayers or requests - you should be careful with what you ask - you don't know the asnwers. God Will is His own and not ours. i don't think the electrocution was a surprise from God but rather an oversight - electricity & water don't mix - never have never will. while a tragic accident, i don't think it was a surprise from God - He doesn't work that way ; )

To a degree, yes, because you need to be prepared for the answer God will give you. Contrary to what many people believe, there is no such thing as an unanswered prayer. God answers them all, but in His time, and in accordance with what He knows is best for us. We are only humans, we don't see the whole picture. We may ask God to give us money, but He could have a greater plan. Maybe He will give us the money, but His answer is "not right now", because we have something in the way of our ability to be good stewards of that money. Or, He may say "No". Whatever happens, we can have faith that when we are in His will, and ready, we can get what we ask for. However, remember, He will never give us more than we can handle. therefore we don't need to worry that we can't handle what He brings our way.

Yes, it is a truism to say "Be careful what you ask for, you might just get it".

May I also add that I do not understand why everyone is suprised he was electrocuted. This is what happens when you stand in water and hold something electric.

seems like the minister was asking for trouble when he reached for a corded microphone.

No. God is not like a genie that grants wishes.

but if god gives us free will then why should we worry about what wishes were asking for.. because if God grants them, then that means hes changing our fate?

Yes...... I have found that when you pray for patience, I tend to be put in situations where my level of patience is tested....

when I've prayed for understanding... this is another one that you should be careful with....
