A function generator is a very versatile instrument that is extensively used in electronics, mechanics, bioengineering, physics and many other fields. It allows you to create a wide variety of synthesized electrical signals and waveforms for testing and diagnostic applications.

The function generator in the EE lab is based on digital signal processing (DSP) methods. A DSP is basically a beefed-up microprocessor which is specially designed for number crunching. DSPs are used in many everyday instruments ranging from a compact disc player, an electronic synthesized piano, or a voice-synthesized telephone answering message system. The DSP is able to generate complex and arbitrary functions. The principle is fairly simple and is called Direct Digital Synthesis .

The waveform generator has many additional features which makes it a very useful instrument for various applications. For instance, one can modulate the waveform using amplitude or frequency (AM and FM) modulation, or can generate a Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) signal, frequency sweep, or a burst waveform. These are selected through the front-panel menu.

A arbitrary waveform generator (AWG) is a piece of electronic test equipment used to generate electrical waveforms. These waveforms can be either repetitive or single-shot (once only) in which case some kind of triggering source is required (internal or external). The resulting waveforms can be injected into a device under test and analyzed as they progress through the device, confirming the proper operation of the device or pinpointing a fault in the device.

Unlike function generators, AWGs can generate any arbitrarily defined waveshape as their output. The waveform is usually defined as a series of "waypoints" (specific voltage targets occurring at specific times along the waveform) and the AWG can either jump to those levels or use any of several methods to interpolate between those levels.

A Function generator is used to generate the wave forms of the required shape as we desired like the Triangular wave, Sine Wave , Square wave.
In the case of Arbitrary waveform generator, the waveforms are generated as determined by the generator and the user cannot be involved in their generation. The User can only increase/decrease the voltage according to which the Waveform will be generated, whereas in the case of Function generator, irrespective of the Voltage, the output will be generated as per the required shape indicated by the user, but the intensity depends upon the voltage.

In Arbitrary waveform generator is mainly used in cases of industries mainly with that of Oscillators whereas in the Function generator it is used in various fields from domestic to higher industrial purposes

a function generator generally refers to the sine waveform generator which uses a tank circuit of only a capaaitor and an inductor,but an arbitrary functiojn generator may use a diff tank circuit or may use a clipper to clip off the unwamted protion from a sine signal...or i may also use a filter to cut of some particular frequency so that you obtain the required waveform

Function generators have a selection of waveforms. Arbitrary waveform generators just have one.

Oscillator frequently refers to uncomplicated circuitry for offering variable frequency. Oscillator can use transistors, opamps, crystals etc.
