Dear Friend,

Hard and Soft lens terminologies are pretty outdated these days.
RGP (Rigid Gas Permeable) and Soft CL are better terminologies.

The difference is in the material they are made up of. It is not that rigid lenses are named as RGP and are the only lenses that permit oxygen through them. Soft lenses also transmit oxygen through them.

Rigid lenses have got less water in them and so are rigid in nature (do not flex more, harder). Soft lenses are made up of hydrophillic material making them soft and flexible.

The type of refractive error does not determine what lens can be worn. Both myopes and hyperopes can wear both rigid and soft lenses comfortably.

Whether a person is a good or a bad candidate for soft contact lens can only be claimed after performing certain eye examination.

Indications of rigid lenses:
* people having irregular corneas
* people having high degree of astigmatism (cylindrical power)
* people who prefer better vision over comfort.
* people who are less compliant with soft lenses
* people having dryness problems
* people who have problems handling a soft lens.

rest all can wear soft lenses comfortably.

Myopia is being nearsighted and hyperopia is being farsighted. As far as who has the better product, I'm not sure, but you also asked about the difference in soft and hard contacts. Hard contacts are make of glass and soft are made of vinyl.
