You want contiguous files. Contiguous files are the opposite of fragmented files. Files aren't always written contiguously on the disk. That means that one file is on a bunch of different parts of the disk instead of all grouped together in one spot. Since disks are physical it takes up time to skip around to different parts of the disk to read a single file. Thats why Contiguous file accesses are faster. Fragmented file accesses are slower. It's like reading a newspaper article and it says continue on page 18 and you skip to page 18 to finish reading. It takes time to flip through the pages. Thats fragmentation.
