Hello. Literally translated from Italian to English "Mi piace questo bimbo" means "I like that child/baby/kid" ( Yes, "bimbo" is the abbreviated form of the Italian word "bambino",which signifies a small child, kid and also a baby, it stress only on the small age of the child).
As to your as you call it "ignorance", we would be all prodigious if we were fluent in most languages.Right?

"Mi piace questo bimbo" is "I like this child" but probably means someone older than that.
"Bimbo" is not the short form for "bambino", it is the tuscan form, is used only in Tuscany and is often "ageless".
And here, in Tuscany, a mother can say "il mio bimbo" (my boy) also if the "kid" is fifty years old...

If someone calls my child a "Bimbo", we are going to fight!!! Funny, what us Americans classify as a Bimbo, has nothing to do with children. Isn't a Bimbo a dumb blond who puts out ?
