It's *77 here in Virginia. It is short for *SP. It's the State Highway Patrol's non-emergency number for just such an occasion. If you're a woman driving alone at night, and you've got an unmarked car trying to pull you over, you have every right to call that number. There's an email going around out there somewhere that warns of this. A woman was being followed by an unmarked car w/ flashing lights, and instead of stopping right away, she dialed *77 and talked to the state police. They told her not to pull over because they didn't have any cars near her at that time. They directed her where to go, had a couple cars waiting for her, and when she pulled over, they nailed the guy. Turns out he was a rapist and that was his way to get to unsuspecting women. If it's ever dark and you're worried about who's pulling you over, just tap your brakes or turn on your hazard flashers to acknowledge that you understand you might be getting pulled over, but keep driving to a well-lit place with people around. If it is a real cop, he should understand that you're just trying to protect yourself, as long as you acknowledge that he's back there.

The *77 number works in some states. Usually the number to be used is posted along the road. In Florida for instance, the number is *FHP. If you are pulled over by an unmarked patrol car and you are not sure if it legit, be sure to call the # or 911. Advise them that you are being followed and confirm that it is legit. To be safe, go to a busy location that is well lit. If possible, do this in either case.

You have the right to ask to see a marked POLICE vehicle, or pull into a well lit gas station or other public place.
