Have you ever smelled someone that just came in from a "smoke" they stink, one disadvantage. Kissing someone that smokes is like kissing an ashtray, two. The cost of smokes, three. A serious cause of heart disease, four. A serious cause of cancer, five. Shortness of breath and I'll cheat here and add some for other diseases, six, seven, eight, nine and ten.

We could go on and on but, what's the sense. Don't smoke, you could spend all day putting down the cause of not smoking. Don't do it, don't start. be smart, don't smoke.

Smoking involves inhaling and absorbing chemicals into the body. These chemicals are both poisonous and addictive. They include nicotine, tar and carbon monoxide.

What is tar?

Cigarette smoke contains tiny particles. These particles can be collected on a filter pad in a laboratory. Tar is usually defined as the particulate matter collected by this way after water and nicotine have been extracted. Some of the components in tar have been identified as related to some of the serious health risks from smoking such as cancer. In most countries around the world tar and nicotine measurements are printed on the cigarettes packs. They vary with the tobacco blend and how the cigarette is manufactured for example, tiny air holes to reduce the amount of smoke.

What is nicotine?
Nicotine occurs naturally in the tobacco plant and is a constituent of tobacco smoke. Nicotine has mild pharmacological properties; it has a mild stimulant effect, similar to that of caffeine, and also depressant effects on the central nervous system. It can cause a wide variety of symptoms such as: alertness or relaxation changes in mood and behaviour and it can increase pulse and blood pressure. Once a person starts smoking he or she quickly becomes addicted to nicotine. The nicotine found in tobacco is as addictive as cocaine. Therefore there is a risk of experiencing withdrawal symptoms.

What is carbon monoxide?

Carbon monoxide is a gas formed when organic substances burn. It is formed for example, when wood burns, and in cigarettes when tobacco is burned. Some health authorities have associated carbon monoxide with the heart disease risks from smoking.

Overall cigarette smoke is one of the world’s most complex mixtures and one that has been extensively studied. Tobacco contains thousands of different constituents (approx 25000 have been identified in tobacco to date). The complexity of cigarette smoke is among the difficulties that researchers have come across while trying to determine which of the constituents are related to the various health effects associated with smoking.

OKay if you are a smoker:

*You can get lung or oral cancer
*You stink (really, you do, and so do your belongings if you smoke in your car or house)
*You think you taste and smell things okay, but in reality those senses have been dulled by your smoking
*You are more prone to getting bronchitis when you catch a cold
*You cough more than non-smokers
*You are putting your heart at risk
*You do not have as much stamina as you would if you were a non-smoker
*You have an addiction, who wants to be saddled with one of those?

I dont think there are any disadvantages of smoking as long as you are in India because the pollution is so high that the disadvantage of smoking is nullified.

Smoking, whether it is in the form of cigarettes, bidi, cigar or hookah, is a form of nicotine addiction. All of them are harmful. It can cause cancer and damages the lungs and the respiratory tract.

Cigarette smoking is a major cause of preventable deaths worldwide. On an average, people who smoke die 5 to 8 years earlier than people who dont smoke. Tobacco users, and people who live with smokers, have nearly all cases of lung cancer. Their risk of developing throat, mouth, oesophageal, pancreatic, kidney, bladder, and cervical cancer is several times greater than for people who are not regularly exposed to tobacco smoke. Smoking is the major cause of emphysema, a debilitating lung disease which slowly destroys a persons ability to breathe normally. Smoking is especially hazardous for people with heart disease, blood vessel disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or a family history of these diseases.

Smokers, and those living with smokers, have a two times greater risk of fatal heart disease. Smoking also increases the risk of having a stroke. Women, especially those over 35 years old, who take birth control pills and smoke have an increased risk of stroke or heart attack. Increased blood pressure is another danger of smoking. Smoking also decreases HDL (the good cholesterol) levels. Smokers and people living with them have a two to three times greater chance of having peptic ulcers. Smokers also have a greater than average risk of hip, wrist, and fractures of the spine. In addition, smoking also complicates sleep disorders. Smokers also tend to get colds and other respiratory tract infections more often than nonsmokers.

Tobacco smoke is dangerous to nonsmokers. Exposure to the smoke, also called passive smoking, increases the risks of nonsmokers getting the same problems as smokers. A nonsmoker in a very smoky room for 1 hour with several smokers inhales as many bad chemicals as he would inhale by actually smoking 10 or more cigarettes himself.

Smoking affects pregnant women and their unborn children. Smoking mothers have a greater risk of miscarriage and stillbirth. Children born to women who smoke have lower birth weights on average. They also have more frequent respiratory infections, a higher risk of chronic ear infections and asthma, and less efficient lung function. Children of smokers usually become cigarette smokers themselves. The more cigarettes a person smokes each day, the greater the risk of disease. Cigar and pipe smokers are at the same risk for cancers of the mouth, lip, larynx, and oesophagus as cigarette smokers. Fortunately, when a smoker stops smoking many of these risks decrease. Users of snuff or chewing tobacco (smokeless tobacco) increase their risk of cancer of the mouth. The mouth cancer can develop relatively quickly, within 10 to 15 years of the first use of snuff or chewing tobacco.
