The processing time varies. It depends on which service center you send the application to. Also, remember, just because you filed the application does not mean it will be approved. Your family member has to pass the physical exam, background check and interview. There is no "right" to immigrate to the United States.

Visit www.uscis.gov. Go under Hot Topics, then Case Status and Processing Dates. You have options. Either go to "Finding the Status of your case". If you type in your case number (it is provided on the receipt notice you should get in the mail within 3 weeks of having filed), it will let you know how the processing of your case is going. Or you can click on Obtaining a list of processing dates and look up the Service Center where you filed and the type of form you filed and it will let you know what the current processing time is. You can check as often as you like. You should also call the USCIS hotline if its past the processing date of your application and you still have not heard a decision.
