I had it. Put 2 plastic glasses of water with a spoon in them in the freezer, next day rub your jaws for 5 minutes, 2 times a day, it helps the pain. My doctor set me to a physical therapists for tmj, this was one of the things he told me to do along with other jaw exercises.

My orthodontist put braces on my teeth and a plate on the roof of my mouth to cure mine. It's supposed to reset the position of my jaw and realigning the teeth somewhat at the same time. It has been working so far. The braces will only be on 10 months (being I am an adult and things are aligning faster than planned). Ask your dentist and if he says surgery is the only option, get another opinion. Mine used to be painful too but Tylenol worked best for the pain. In the meantime, do not chew gum or stuff like gummies, licorice, caramel...anything that puts strain on your jaw, to prevent future flare-ups.

Not personally, but a problem with the temporomandibular joint, could be mentioned perhaps, the next time you visit your dentist...?
It is not uncommon, affecting as many as 40% of the population at some time or other, - and is more common in females.
In view of your added notes - perhaps a visit to the doctor...?

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the area directly in front of the ear on either side of the head where the upper jaw (maxilla) and lower jaw (mandible) meet. Within the TMJ, there are moving parts that allow the upper jaw to close on the lower jaw. This joint is a typical sliding "ball and socket" that has a disc sandwiched between it. The TMJ is used throughout the day to move the jaw, especially in biting and chewing, talking, and yawning. It is one of the most frequently used joints of the body.

are you or have you been stressed recently?
because this can cause you to clench your teeth and you probably may not notice it, if you are doing that it compresses the joint which, obviously, is very painful.
i have a problem with mt TMJ too but I'm currently wearing braces for my teeth so after these I'll getting a plate to wear at night to stop the clenching from damaging the TMJ.
Tell your dentist who may be able to deal with it themselves or if it is severe, they may refer you to a specialist. It is fairly common though so there are plenty of solutions. =)
hope this is at least some help.

Yes, after some general anaesthetic ops, it was discovered my tmj was mis-aligned. I had to wear a special mouthguard each night to put it back into the right place and have ultrasound as well. A cranial osteopath can prob. help you find out if it is 'out' and help you get it back. Are you grinding your teeth at night? This often causes TMJ problems.

Yes, I do, and I have to get my chiroptactor to pop it back into place sometimes. It happens when I clench or grind my teeth while sleeping. Instead of going to the dentist for one of those expensive mouth guards, just go to a sports store and purchase a regular one.

Yes, I also have problems. For as long as I can remember it has tended to click when I move it to the side, however recently it has stop doing this and I suspect that I may be grinding my teeth when I am asleep. This could be why yours aches, are you stressed about anything that could be causing you to do this?

Ask your dentist to make you a night guard or a BRA! ( bite raising appliance.) You will need to go to your dentists to have impressions taken and its made in a lab. I will probably cost in the region of £60.00/£100.00. That should do the trick!!!!!!!!!!
