Other than Stalin (who was a dictator rather than extremist) , have there been any atheist or agnostic extremists in history?

Okay, wrong wording, if it bothers you assume I asked about atheist/agnostic fundimentalists.

Thank you RW, you're the only one so far to actually get what I'm talking about. I did actually ask about these people in history (ie: having an impact on the world) but thanks all the same.

EyeLoveJesus: while I appreciate your positive attitude, I meant for you to provide examples of these notable extremists.

Earl D: An atheist is someone who doesn't believe in God or gods. An agnostic is someone who doesn't believe in them but cannot be 100% sure because of lack of proof for either argument. You've listed a lot of religious people there. Hitler was Catholic btw. I'm not sure about the others but I think it's fair to say that you shouldn't be listing them because you don't know their religion. BTW: Pagan religions are still religions.

Well, I am an extremist.
Believe in nothing or you are going to be buried in the ground and face your judgment through which style coffin you get!

There, now I am a atheistic extremist.

Hitler?

Nero?

Do Pagans count?

Stalin was an extremist! Not ALL dicators kill their opponants!

Hitler didn't.

Hitler TROUNCED them so he didn't really need to lock them up and kill them.

Roosevelt didn't.

He scared Congress enough to pass a TWO TERM law

Reagan could have won a third and fourth term.

He wasn't an extremist dictator either!

Attilah the Hun (what Religoin was he!)

Gengis Khan (What religion was he!)

ANYONE, theist or atheist, is capable of being an extremist.

There is NO protection afforded by any system of belief.

Mao

He had drug dealer and users shot at a wall

There are films you can watch about this.

He put them up against a wall and killed them for dealing in Opium and Heroin.

He also purged the country of ALL western Art and Music. Only Revolutionary themes were allowed. THAT is extremist!

It was illegal to own a WESTERN MUSICAL INSTRUMENT in the term of Mao! ONLY Chineses folk instruments were allowed.

This was called the "cultural revolution."

Look it up!

That is definately Extremist and Mao was a believer in "Religion is the Opiate of the People" hence an Atheist.

Some Agnostics could be extremist, such as some of the Randomists.

Planks views are sort of extreme to some scientists.

A better question, I think, is whether or not atheism or agnosticism causes evil in the world. There were certainly evil people who did not believe in god (Stalin being the prime example), but obviously none of them were evil _because_ they did not believe in god. Similarly, there were evil people who did believe in god (Hitler the prime example) but did not do their evil deeds because of their belief.

There are plenty of evil deeds committed without any respect to whether or not a person believed in god.

Unfortunately for religion, there is also plenty of evil committed because of belief in god. Atheists come out ahead overall, as no-one commits evil because of atheism.

I am as extreme as an atheist can get. I seriously don't believe in deities. That is as far as you can take atheism. There is no doctrine to go extreme about.

The suicide bombers in Islam are not extremists. They are fundamentalists. They are the Fred Phelps and Jerry Falwell's of the Muslim world. They take their doctrines seriously.

I talked to an Evangelical Atheist once.

I'm not sure if they were serious or not. but it was funny.

and by evangelical atheist, I mean that they didn't simply disbelieve... or deny it... but proactively preach AGAINST the existance, or even possible existance of any deitys.
