Firm shift is not necessarily a bad thing. Hard body slam shifts are not. Does the transmission shift hard in all gears? or just 2/3 up shift or 1/2 up shift? Has this transmission shifted hard for the last 6 years and how many miles has the car been. Some diagnostic can be done with out opening up the transmission. Reading what the line pressure is and checking what the shift/line pressure solenoids are doing. However this is dealer type work for technician who has Consult 2 and work shop manual on his notebook computer Like I am typing on now. I am assuming there is no check engine light. Fail safe operation when the check engine light is on can make the transmission shift hard too. Does the engine light light and dash lights up when you turn on the key "Lamp check" ?
