God chose the name for himself--"YHWH". ("Eloi" is not his name. That's the name of one type of future people in H. G. Wells' "The TIme Machine".) The words "el" and "eloha" mean merely "god", of which there are many mentioned in the Bible.

Psalm 83:18 (King James Version)
(KJV)
18That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, ("YHWH" in Hebrew here) art the most high over all the earth.

Exodus 3:15 (King James Version)
(KJV)
15And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, the LORD ("YHWH" again, here) God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.

"YHWH" in no way means "Lord", even though it's commonly rendered such (as in one example above). This is due to a traditional substitution made by Jews when reading the scriptures aloud. A superstition existed (and still exists) that the name is too sacred to be pronounced. In the Hebrew part of the scriptures, however, the name YHWH was rightly spoken aloud by his worshippers as well as others.

The word "YHWH" occurs 6,828 times in the Hebrew text printed in "Biblia Hebraica" and the "Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia". This name appears thousands of occurences more than the next most common name in the Bible. It's full of meaning. The name comes from the Hebrew "hawah"--"become". A proper translation of the divine name is "He causes to become".

As mentioned, "YHWH' is normally not pronounced aloud by Jewish people, but the alternate words "adonai" ("sovereign lord") and "elohim" (meaning either "great god" or "gods") are substituted. Since proper pronunciation was avoided for so long, and since written ancient Hebrew was made up of consonants only, the pronunciation has been forgotten.

To be honest most of what I know comes from the Bible. The word God or Elohiem is simply a title. It means Judge or Powerful one. The name of God is often written in the Bible LORD as the original Jewish writers did not wish to write the actual name of God. There are two places in the Old Testament where God tells man his name. The first time is on Mount Sinai where Moses asks his name and God says, "I AM that I AM" or in other words, "I AM THE SELF SUFFICIENT ONE". Also later on God reminds Moses that the Patriarchs of Israel knew God as Jehovah which is another way of saying I AM. In fact the name Jesus in Hebrew is pronounced Jeshua (Jehovah Savior or The God who is my Savior) or in English Joshua. The reason we often say Jesus is because the New Testament was translated first into Greek and then into Latin. (Some books such as Luke, Acts, and Mark were possibly written in Greek or Latin to start with and those who translated may have misunderstood how the name should have been pronounced.) Also if you look at the Old Testament there are if I remember correctly six names/titles for God. Meaning six spots where the name Jehovah is used with a particular title to describe a specific attribute of God. They are (if I remember correctly): 1. Jehovah Shammah (The LORD who is present). 2. Jehovah Ropheh (not sure on spelling) (means The God who heals). 3. Jehovah Tsidkeneu (The LORD our Righteousness). 4. Jehovah Jireh (The LORD will provide). 5. Jehovah Raah (The LORD is my Shepherd). And to be honest I forget the sixth name but I will look it up and let you know. Email me monday and I should have the answer as well as proper spelling for all of them. God is also referred to as "The Almighty God" or El Shaddai as well as "The Everlasting One" or El Olam. You ask as to how God was given these names. I will be honest that much of this comes from my own personal beliefs and faith. I believe that God really does exist and that he truly intervines in human affairs. I also believe that he inspired EVERY word in the Bible (the originals obviously not the King James Version) (although I personally believe the KJV is the best translation). Thus I believe that God spoke to various men at various times and gave them the privilige of knowing his personal name and inspired them to write it down so that we could know it today. With all due respect to other beliefs, that is what makes Christianity different from other religions. Rather than being forced to try and reach a god who never deems to be satisfied or reward us for our worship and dwells so far above humans, we have a God who reached down to man and put on human flesh and offers eternal life as a free gift to all who want it. Recently I believe that the comment was made by a Muslim that to suggest God taking human flesh was blasphemy as God was to great to need to become human. God did not become human for His benefit but for ours. Being Omniscient or All Knowing, He already knew and understood the pain and suffering that we went through. However, as our knowledge is limited he became human so that we could pray to Him knowing that he understands.

technically, God doesnt really have a name. The word God is just a word people use to show he is all powerfull. The 99 names of Allah in (i think its the muslim religion) we made up by people over time, and as its says where i studied in RS, the 100th name is not known. So I dont know, God doesnt really have a name.

God gave his name to Moses when they were on the mountain. God said tell them I am that I am, which converts to JHVH in Hebrew. The Hebrew language has no vowel letters although it has punctuation marks that denote vowel sounds.

Who-ever thought it up, gave him his name! There is so many things in the bible that can't be answered or prooved. So I don't think you've got a chance of finding the answer to your question.

He gave His own name.

Exodus 3:14 And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.

This indicates GOD is self existent. He exist apart from anyone or anything else and always was and always will be.

HE has used other names throughout history

HE IS!

Colossians 2:9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

HE IS: Elohim ...or GOD...this is a plural form of "god" found in the fourth word of the Bible so actually we are told in the beginning Gods created the heavens and the earth. We see the full Godhead at work in creation in verses such as Isaiah 44:24, 45:16 and 48:13

We find this fully shows JESUS CHRIST in that we are told HE created the
heavens and the earth...compare the above with Col 1:16,
John 1:3 and Hebrews 1:9,10

HE IS: JEHOVAH the self existing one...Exodus 3:14..HE has no beginning, no
end. Jehovah is fully revealed in Jesus Christ...John 1:1 In the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the word was God.

Jesus was in the
beginning...the same as was Jehovah...there was never a time He did not exist.

HE IS: Jehovah-jirah...the Lord will provide. Gen 22:14 This was given when Abraham
offered up Issac and God provided a lamb...Gen 22:8 And Abraham said My son, God will provide a lamb...And HE did ....in the person of JESUS CHRIST...Who fully revealed Jehovah-jirah

HE IS: Jehovah-rapah..the Lord who heals...Exodus 15:26 where God reveals Himself as a God of healing...HE healed Israel of hunger and thirst and promised that they would get none of the diseases he visited upon the Egyptians. JESUS CHRIST is our Great Physician...HE is the healer of broken hearts...the healer of broken homes, of broken spirits thus Jehovah God is once again fully revealed in Jesus Christ.

HE IS: Jehovah-nissi The Lord My banner...Exodus 17:8-15. Amalek which is significant of the flesh was in battle with God's people. When Moses held his arms up, God's people were winning...when he was tired and let his arms down, they started losing so Aaron and Hur lifted Moses arms up and the battle was won.

People YOUR church leaders and the leaders of these groups need YOU to be their Aaron and Hur...Lift HIGH the Cross of JESUS. The victory is won only by Devine help as we Lift High JESUS CHRIST who is our banner....a full revelation of the Lord God Almighty... John 3:14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: When Moses lifted up the serpent...all one need to do was to LOOK and LIVE...

HE IS: Jehovah-shalom the God of Peace Judges 6:24 as God reassured Gideon. Jesus is a full expression of the Godhead as He is the PRINCE OF PEACE...Isaiah 9:6 (see Peace on Earth?

HE IS: Jehovah-shammah...the Lord is present. Ezek 48:35 This verse shows the best part of heaven...the Lord is THERE. Jehovah has always been with His people. Again this is fully shown in the fact that JESUS CHRIST promised never to leave us or forsake us. Hebrews 13:5 compare with Matthew 28:20

HE IS: Jehovah-tsidenu The Lord our righteous...Jer. 23:6 In this revelation of Jehovah.. there is an exception...Jesus Christ is not a full revelation of Jehovah in His names...JESUS CHRIST IS called JEHOVAH-tsidkenu.
