I don't know if this will mean anything to a child, but I did write this quote down when I was still in my teens:
"Knowledge is a comfortable and necessary retreat and shelter for us in an advanced age; and if we do not plant it while young, it will give us no shade when we grow old." --Lord Chesterfield

Well, I don't know a good quote on this subject, but I do know of a good and TRUE story that is great to inspire. Albert Einstein, the most intelligent person to ever live, was actually thought to be mentally impaired until he was nearly 10 years old, and look at the legacy HE left us all.

She knows what is the best purpose of education: not to be frightened by the best but to treat it as part of daily life.
-John Mason Brown
Education's purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one.
-Malcolm Forbes
Perhaps the most valuable result of all education is the ability to make yourself do the thing you have to do, when it ought to be done, whether you like it or not; it is the first lesson that ought to be learned; and however early a man's training begins, it is probably the last lesson that he learns thoroughly.
-Thomas H. Huxley

An ancient Chinese emperor demanded from his court philosopher a response that would be appropriate for EVERY occasion, on threat of excecution. The philosopher thought about it for a day or so, and offered,
"This too shall pass."
Recalling this has gotten me through many a difficult time in life, and though I doubt the double meaning exists in the Chinese, it's certainly applicable for your intended use!
