Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) had once said that Hajj should be performed only ONCE in one's lifetime.

But I've observed that quite a few Muslims go on pilgrimage to Mecca several times. Why is it so? Some even flaunt their "status" by saying: "I've performed Hajj twice!" Others retort: "Ah! That's nothing Mr. So-and-So has performed Hajj thrice."

One of my friend's relative has performed Hajj 8 (eight) times. People look up to him with awe and admiration. Now, do you as a Muslim think that this is right? Is such a n act justified?

Please enlighten me on this issue.

you can perform it several times, but you are supposed to go for God and God only so if you're bragging about, it puts you in kind of a precarious situation from my understanding. Doing acts of worship to show off or to get praise is considered a minor shirk(polytheism, disbelief). I have never observed this but I don't doubt it goes on. I think it would be alot nicer to help a poorer person go to Hajj.

i do think it is right... the Prophet(pbuh) said it was OBLIGATORY to go once... i do not think going more than once could be wrong

however i do think it is wrong that some muslims use hajj to give themselves status... i have seen this and it kind of defeats the point of going...

i read a book call One Thousand Roads to Mecca by Michael Wolfe (this is a beautiful compilation of ppls stories of hajj) and one of the writers said that once he left the Holy Land his heart never stopped longing for it. i think if you have the means.... it would be a wonderful thing to spend your money on

asalamwalaikum

EDIT: edsawyer i love to meet people like you who are educated in other ppls faiths..... knowledge is the only way we can truly see tolerance in our societies

I'm not a Muslim but I'm inclined to agree with you. It seems to me that it would have made that person a better Muslim to go on Hajj once and then help seven other, poorer people go.

There are off-season pilgrimages called 'umre' (not sure how to spell it). Might your friend's relative have meant that? As far as I know, umre is not a requirement and you can do it as often as you jolly well please.

Islam doesn't limit how many time any muslims to go there. Islam said you have to go there AT LEAST once rather then never in your whole life.

Issue? what issue? why would somebody's actions that are none of your business raise concern with you? The peacefull pursuit of oneness with one's God is a problem now, too?
I think you're jealous.
