People tell me I'm so pretty, people tell me I'm so smart, people say the nicest things sometimes, problem is, I don't believe these things in my own head. How do I pick up my confidence? To top it off, i'm in law school right now and that sort of crazy stressful, competitive environment just brings out any insecurities you have about yourself. I need to get past this confidence issue in order to stay focused on my goal. Please someone offer some advice.

Therapy is a good place to sort out where this is coming from.

Therapy is not for "crazy" people. Many people with issues just as you described seek the help of a competent therapist to help them overcome these issues. There is hope.

Some therapists believe that whenever there is incongruence with how one functions (competent, put together, etc) and how they feel inside about this... that there is a wounded place from childhood that needs to be healed. Since you are smart and educated, it should not take you any time at all to uncover these and heal.

I have a feeling this is a very common issue because other people don't see us the way we see ourselves. We know the real workings of our lives so they're really on the outside looking in. Try mental "self-talk" by telling yourself what others have been telling you and keep on doing it until it becomes real to you personally. After all, aren't you your own closest friend? Somehow, even though I've never met you, I believe the people who are saying these great things about you are seeing the absolute "truth" of who you are. Wishing you peace.

you poor thing. you do sound smart and i'm sure if people say you are pretty then you probably are. its funny how i just said that to you because i am totally and utterly exactly the same except i'm not in law school:( i put it down to how i was treated as a child by my siblings who always called me fat and ugly when i was neither. but i must have been kind of sensitive to begin with for it to have effected me like it has. i find it hard to do anything in my life. dont leave law school! if you do you'll feel like a failure and thats another hard feeling to overcome. hope i was helpful you gorgeous smart thing:)

Ann:

The stress is created by you, forget about it being competitive.
Just KNOW that YOUR the STUFF, this will kick in the focus automatically . At first if any other thought comes into your mind, say.. I don't want this thought ) and replace it with confidence that you have in yourself. good luck.

Look Ann can you expect any body to love you without you being loving yourself. it's some thing like this...

All these goodies that they say about you is not going to stay with you unless you believe you are doing good....
coz you are what you believe and if you believe that you are bad... you actually are... no matter what others say....
so infact you must be believing in yourself that you are doing good even if others say the otherwise.........

believing in your capabilities and over confidence are some thing that you need to watch out...
Good Luck!
