Hi there...consider using double-sided sticky tape on areas you would like to discourage the inappropriate clawing. Most pet stores sell a product called Bitter Apple http://www.arcatapet.com/item.cfm?cat=1576 which is usually an effective deterrent against cats. Additionally, trimming the nails every other week will help minimize the damage of clawing to furnishings/carpeting by blunting the nails. Here are two websites which shows photos/videos and provides detailed information on how to trim your cats' nails safely: http://www.catscratching.com/htmls/article.htm and a detailed step-by-step video by Cornell Unversity College of Veterinary Medine: http://www.felinevideos.vet.cornell.edu/trimming_claws/

To be honest I have never had this problem, but I know others who have.
You can put double sided tape on your furniture. Or buy "stick paws" which is much the same thing. Spray the area with citrus. Have a scratching post for the cat as well.

I am not one for de-clawing as I feel it is cruel and unnecessary as there are more humane remedies that do not entail mutilation

I can't believe that nobody has suggested soft paws yet. www.softpws.com. They are small plastic covers that fit over the cats nail and are so much more humane than declawing. Both my cats have these on and they still are able to scratch their posts but don't do any damage. They come in all different colors and are really easy to apply. Most vets will apply them for a fee or what we did was have the vet show us how to do one then my boyfriend and I did the rest in front of her to make sure that we did it right.

All great suggestions, the only thing is, that if the cat prefers the furniture, thats the way it will probably always be...........My sofa has shredded arms, so I just throw quilts over them, the room looks nice and homey, and the cats don't like scratching the quilts.......They also have scratching posts, and one even uses the dog's back..........

Hi

I think every cat owner has this problem.

I made a scratching post for my cat, and she wasnt really using it. So when I was playing with her, I`d go over to the post & scratch it myself, and she would copy. Then I`d give her lots of pats & encouragement. Now she only uses the post. Good kitty!

Good luck, cats are smart, they do the wrong thing sometimes just to piss you off!

1. Keep kitty's claws trimmed

2. Train with a spray bottle of water

3. Make sure you have plenty of scratching posts

take him to the vet and have it declaw many people says its wrong but it stop the problem or buy a pole of wood and let him have a fun time with it or take him or her outside and let him
scratch on the tree.cats do that because they like their claws sharp so they can catch mice or birds.

try getting a scratching post, or buying some catnip from a nursery. Cats go mad for catnip!!

Put aluminum foil on the couch, its annoying but worth it because cats hate the sound and feel of it. I've done it, it worked for me. :)
