NO, I have never heard this. I have an african grey and he has never eaten "clay". Not really sure what you mean by clay? I feed mine a staple of zupreem fruit pellets, which are a complete diet, fresh fruit and veges a few times a week, peanuts as treats and other stuff as snack, like cooked rice, bread crust etc. He has always been very healthy and NOISY! LOL Right now he is barking like one of the dogs! LOL Hope that helps.
p.s. it is KNOWN that a diet based totally on SEEDS can cause fatty liver disease, among other calamities and greatly shorten the life of your parrot. Keep seeds to a small amount of their diet.
