Hi Sarah
The reason your shins hurt when you run is because it is a hard impact exercise. If you have been suffering with this then you need to go and see your doctor. Please don't run anymore at the moment. Try some low impact exercises like an exercise bike, rowing machine, lateral thigh trainer etc. High and low impact doesn't mean they are any less effective for you, it just means that they are a little kinder to your bones.
Hope this helps. :-)

Like the above poster wrote, take like a one week break to allow your body to heal. Then when u feel better go running with long tube socks maybe wear 2 at a time to keep your shins supported. I know alot of older gentlemen who go running and have done this method. Remember wear tube socks over your shins and if you have to wear 2 on each foot to make it tighter.

I've had shin splints as well and they can be the most painful thing ever! I kept running and ended up so bad that they throbbed even when I was sitting down! You need to rest for as long as you possibly can (took me 6 months) and get orthodics fitted in your shoes to correct foot strike. Ice definatly helps with the inflammation also.

Get better sneakers. don't even attempt to run until they're healed. And when you start again point and flex you're foot and make circles to warm up.
