China and Russia could both hit us with bombs. I suppose we could see it coming but if we did it would be the last thing we see.

I worked with nuclear weapons when I was in the military. That being said, there are things I can say and things I can't (due to security issues). One thing I can tell you is this, ...if you are close enough to a populated area to see the contrails (vapor cloud) coming off the re-entry body of a MIRV (Multiple Independant Re-entry Vehicle), just close your eyes, ...it will be all over in a matter of seconds. You will become a cloud of mon-atomic hydrogen shortly after the "blinding white flash". To be quite honest, you would be better off than the people who survive. A post nuclear exchange world will be literal hell for those whom survive.
There are a number of countries in the world who possess the ability to launch a sustained direct nuclear attack against the United States. The biggest threat still is and always has been, Russia. If the Russians launch their ICBMs, SLCMs and SLBMs against us and those weapons are programmed to come at us over the North pole, we would have literally minutes from launch detection to get our response in the air before we as a nation, culture and a people are wiped from the face of the Earth.
During the Cold War, the stalemate created by MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction) kept everyone's fingers off the nuclear trigger. No one wanted to start anything because the price to pay for doing so was too high. Today, with the advent of rogue states like North Korea and Iran acquiring nukes, the danger is much higher than it ever was during the Cold War.
What's even scarier is that scientists are presently working with materials and delivery systems that will make the Hydrogen Bomb look like a fire cracker. The WMDs of the furture will be planet killers, ...weapons that, once unleashed, will destroy not only mankind but the planet we live on. If you google the internet, you should be able to find articles relating to "Dark Matter" and even "Anti-Matter" (and no, I'm not talking about Star Trek). That's all I care to say about those topics at this point; I promised the U.S. Government I would not disclose certain things once I was honorably discharged and that's a promise I intend to keep. Just remember this, boys and girls, ...a nuclear bomb is nothing more than a massive release of energy at an atomic level. It doesn't take a bomb the size of a truck to level a city, ...more like one the size of a briefcase. For with nuclear weapons it's not the size of the weapon that counts, ...it's in the purity of the "fuel" that sustains the chain reaction. The higher the purity, the bigger the bang.

If you were in a city and saw the nuke coming you would die quickly after it hit. You wouldn't have time to flee.
We are all going to die but those in "target" cities are going to go first. If you live in a major city or an area around a strategic military base or installation, you should be worried.
Only comfort is that very few nations have the capability to hit us with a nuke launched in the traditional manner. Russia, China, U.K. (it could be accidental).
There are fears of a device smuggled into the country and then detonated in an urban area or strategic location but I believe the blast yield from one like that may be a lot smaller. Plus a "dirty bomb" is not the same thing.
We are heading back into a nuclear threatened world.
but that is not to be our ultimate doom.

Nope. If it were a nuclear ballistic missile especially. A nuke from a bomber may be different. It'd be tough to spot cause of it's size in relation to the sky. ICBM's are the slower of the group, but actually take 30minutes to travel across the globe. Nutshell: It's possible but unlikely to see the bomb, unless you know it's coming and where it'll be. Runnin away from it depends on the type.

I the world we live in today id say yes but it would be very difficult because of our electronic counter measures. The only true way we could be bombed wide open if another country was to us whats called an EMP first. As far as the bomb is concerned they travel at a very high rate of speed about time you see it its pretty much to late.

we have a system implemented in our arsenal of missles called shield that would take out any incoming armaments from other countries. bombs would have to be dropped from high flying aircraft but our new system would taken them out as well.our old NORAD has been set aside for the newer and very affective shield system but can be manned quickly for conventional reasons.the starwars project was scrapped during regans administration because of the many technical problems that existed.you and your friend didnt see a rocket it was an experimental jet with a speed of mach 2.5. if you see an incoming missle you wont have time to think where can i go.you will be vaporized if its a nuke and it will be.

if you looking up at the right place in the sky you may see it but if it hits near you, well ya dead mate.
you could flee but im guessing your body would automatically do that when the bomb hits and you go in so many directions at once.

At night you might catch a momentary glimpse of an ICBM's reentry vehicle right before the air burst.

Nuclear, you got no time to run, you might see it thought, but by the time you see it, it's too late.
