I like the fact that PCWorld recommends it (for NT and98 although Microsoft no longer supports it for anything), that it creates an " undo.reg" file, and that it cleans up the registry a bit. Is there another free program that does these things and more that is recommended for XPSP2? I am not very knowledgeable about the registry, but I know to be super careful about changing things. How do I back up the registry....preferably free programs?

I still use it although it's only cleaning a portion of the registry. What I do like though is a progam call NTREGOP. It's a free, or was, download and it does a great job of optimizing the registry. The first time I ran it my registry was reduced by 12%. That's significant, I noticed the difference in startup right away.It also has a registry backup module that is far better than MS's. Your wise in being careful, make sure that system restore is on before you do any mods, you can restore to a day before or earlier depending on how much space you allow it.

Use Registry Mechanic. It is the best registry cleaner. I like it.
If you want freeware, ccleaner is good. It not only clean unwanted files but also clean registry. It also have startup program detection.

as you already know if you use a third party software to do registry cleaner windows will not function properly, because microsoft is making it so you have to use only thier programs , thats why they have so many lawsuits going on ,under the antitrust laws right now ,and its going to get worse when vista comes out , because there making it so it isn't compatable with any 3rd party software yet ,it'll take years in court to get microsoft to quit trying to be the bully on the block
