absolve you of your sins? And how such a feat, even if it were possible, can be seen to be socially desirable? Wouldn't we have enough crime and misconduct anyway without actively encouraging it?

garfield, I am an evangelistic agnostic

funana, when I first wrote the question, I wrote "some criminal" which is what he was considered to be by the people that killed him. Then I changed it to dude, thinking some people might get upset. You can't win. One thing I'm pretty sure of, and that he was not a god. Gods are immortal, aren't they? Yeah, I know, the ressurection...

they believe it is so. Many times belief is way more powerful than logic.

'some dude' does not describe Jesus. He is the only person to live in a body of flesh and NEVER sin. He is the sacrificial lamb for our sins. He took our sins upon Him as He hung on the cross. The beating and scourging and the nails were torment, but added to that was the weight of our sins. That made His death the most horrible ever. I don't know what you mean by socially desirable, but it certainly is personally desirable to have sins removed and to go to Heaven at death. The last question, I don't get it either. A Christian, if they are true Christians are not encouraged toward crime just because we can ask for forgiveness. We are a new person when we receive Jesus and have a desire to do good, not evil. We have God to help us keep the devil and temptations away. A tree is known by it's fruit whether it be good or evil.
I hope you meet Him one day. Many blessings to you in your spiritual quest.

Jesus died because that was required of him to repay to God the perfect life lost when Adam sinned.

his death was prophesied

read: psalm 41:9 fulfilled in john 13:18 21-30
Zechariah 11:12 fulfilled in Matthew 26:14-16
Isaiah 53:7 fulfilled in Matthew 27:11-14
psalm 22:18 fulfilled in Matthew 27:35
psalm 22:7,8 fulfilled in Matthew27:39-43
psalm 34:20 fulfilled in john 19:33,36

all these prophecies were fulfilled in Jesus

Yeah, his death changed nothing. People were going to write what they wrote about him whether he died on a cross or in France with Mary Magdalaine. Crime and misconduct is life, and life is suffering. The only thing Jesus ever brought to the world was his teachings. It was people who created the religion, the traditions, and the "whole messiah bit".

The dude your talking about is Jesus Christ & He was God in the flesh. He lived a life without sin, therefore He was the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all mankind.
You see the wages of sin is death! Romans 6:23 this is what we get paid for sinning & all have sinned! Romans 3:23.
Notice it does not say the wages of sin is eternal life in hell fire but death. In fact eternal life comes thru Jesus Christ Romans 6:23 last part.
Jesus was also our creator. Read John chapter 1. The creator died for the creation! There is no greater love!

Reader's Digest version:

Adam and Eve were created by God and placed in the garden of Eden where they were instructed that they could eat from any of the trees of the garden except one. That tree was a visual reminder of God's sovereignty or right to rule. The consequence for eating from that tree was death in the very day they ate from it. Satan basically told Eve that God was a liar and that they wouldn't die but, instead, would be god-like with the ability to determine for themselves what was good and bad. Adam could have refused to eat the fruit and God would have either provided him with a new wife or perhaps Adam could have pleaded on Eve's behalf, but he chose to eat the fruit instead. This was more of an error on Adam's part because he received the command straight from God whereas Eve was told by Adam. This brought about sin and Adam died at the age of 930 years which was within the one day period God mentioned (1000 of our years is equal to one of God's days -- see Psalm 90:4). God then made provisions for mankind to be redeemed from the sin brought into the world by Adam by providing a ransom sacrifice in the form of another perfect man to give his life in exchange for the perfect life that Adam lost. God provided throughout the Hebrew scriptures prophecy and information for the nation of Israel to look for in the coming Messiah. Jesus filled every prophecy in this regard. His life was transferred from heaven (where he had previously resided with God -- he was God's firsborn of all creation) and into the womb of the virgin girl, Mary. He was therefore born without sin and imperfection. His sacrificial death provided the necessary ransom and thus opened the way for every human being to potentially gain perfect everlasting life in the future when God's Kingdom is established. (God's Kingdom is what people pray for in "the Lord's Prayer" or the "model prayer" which was provided in the book of Matthew - example - "let your kingdom come, let your will be done on earth as it is in heaven"). The execution itself isn't socially desirable, but it was necessary if we were to be reconciled to God.

Because Jesus was God's only son and was executed on the cross without any sin he was able to take on our sin. It is hard to understand.

I think that things would be worse as our sins are not just wiped until we accept christ as our saviour and we confess and repent.

Since accepting christ into my heart the way I was thinking changed and my road I was on that was leading to jail also changed

are you as tough and ressilient as you were potryed in that great film well Jesus actually freely accepted to die and was not forced, His Father could give Him legions of holy Angels to protect Him, He Himself was/is powerful enough to not need that help, He agreed to die so that those who do not believe may be forgiven the punishment due to their unbelief. Pray to Jesus and you will understand all that.

Is it Ironic that Republicans would be for the Death penalty, and the Liberals would be for trying to keep the man alive. I find the whole religion thing bizarre, how can there be one God, yet you need to know this dead guy to get to heaven.

I think your missing the point that Christ CHOOSE freely to come down and lay down his life for us. To fully understand why it is nessicary for him to do that, you would need to know the impact the Fall of Adam had upon us.

The real lesson was not the death of one man. God was trying to tell us that we should start Human sacrifices again. Too bad only the Aztecs were listening
