it stands to reason that its followers would also be the most advanced in every manner & so would be its science & tech. as also its overall contribution to humanity. I therefore request muslims to give me just ONE significant contribution of Islam to the modern world. (ie. after 1800, when almost all the technological advancements in the world have taken place)
Sorry for asking this question again but then I had not clarified my definition of modern.

jerse-I agree muslim women get half the inheritance of men. This right was given to them from the days of Mohammad & far ahead of its time.
However now in developed countries women are entitled to the same as men thus making women equal to men in the true sense of the word. However the half rights which muslim women get remains the same & which are outdated in today's world.

SORRY, but I have not received even one satisfactory reply. My question pertained to the period from the year 1800 onwards ie. the period during which well over 99% of the world's technological innovations have been made. However people have given the answers for a much earlier period.
In my view ISLAM has not been able to contribute anything significant to the MODERN age. Muslims really need to mull over this aspect . Maybe it is because the societies, values and cultures etc. that Islam imposes are at odds with truly modern and open thinking.
If you have a different view, I would like to hear from you.
I am therefore putting the question to vote.

Since it's inception:
Islam has millions of people massacred in the name of "jihad" Millions of forcible conversions are made at the end of the sword.
Millions of Parsees are massacred in Persia and a few remaining ones flee to India.
Millions of non-Muslims are massacred in what are, today, Islamic Countries. Genocide is done in the name of ethnic cleansing to create "Pure Islamic States".
Towards the modern times, Hundreds of planes are hijacked and thousands of innocent people murdered for Palestine and such other issues. Lebanon in flames. Somalia, Yemen and such countries in chaos.
"Kashmiri" and other Islamic militants bomb thousand of locations in India, in the name of Islam.
Pakistan is making the "Islamic Bomb".
9/11. London Train Bombings. The murder of Foreign Journalists video taped and aired on al-Jazeera.
These are the actual "Contributions" to the modern World by Islam.
Algebra is Greek Mathematics which the Muslims claimed was theirs. The Zero was a Hindu Concept found in Vedic mathematics. Americans had to locate the oil in Arabia and Brunei and other Islamic Kingdoms, invest their money on building the infrastructure that the Muslim Kings simply took over by "Privatizing" them, thus stealing what they'd sold earlier to the American Businessmen.
Unable to have their own educational infrastructure, Muslims go to the West and more Cultured Eastern Countries and then do not return home, but stay there. Fortunately, Indians go to the Middle East and start local Educational Institutions.
So, you see, the "Significant" contribution to the Modern World by Islam is - Nothing Productive.

ALOT of people will say "violence, death, etc." But that's mostly the ignorance talking.
One thing that the Muslims did introduce was a woman's right to inherit money from a deceased loved one. Back in the 7th century (During the time of Muhammed) this was unheard of, in fact it was blasphemous. I believe that Muhammed was the first to start women's rights in the ancient world. Questions? Read Chapter 4 (Sura 4 An-Nisa) in the Quran.
If that isn't modern (remind you the West only initiated women's rights about 100 or so odd years ago) I don't know what is.
But it is sad that corruption and greed ruined that tradition, but that doesn't take away the fact that they started women's rights, contrary to many people's opinions.

Did you know that the first University in the world was established a thousand years ago in Cairo, the famous Al Azhar, by the Fatimid Caliphs who were the Imams decended directly from Prophet Muhammad (s.a.s.). The concepts developed by the Muslim astronomers and scientists were widely studied in Europe and became the foundation of modern astronomy and science. They have discovered that the gap of learning during the dark ages and the subsequent "Rennaissance" was ignited by the Muslim torchbearers who kept the flame of knowledge alive by their contribution to the scientific method, mathematics, philosophy, astronomy, optics, chemistry, biology and of course poetry, calligraphy and architecture.
