We recently bought a black lab pup and already had 2 cats, one 6 years old and one 1 year old. The 6 year old is taking to the pup nicely and seems to want to mother her but the 1 year old is having major trouble! I don't understand this at all because he was born into a house with dogs, one that slept with them while Momma Cat was out, and has been around my Mom's dog several times since we got him with no problems. But suddenly he is not liking this pup, hissing and running from her. He (the cat) weighs 21 lbs. (yes he's healthy, just a VERY big cat and not all fat, very tall and long) and the pup only weighs 2.5 lbs so it cannot be a size thing. What can I do to make this transition easier on my cat? He is my heart (I delivered him after he got stuck coming out breach from his momma and had to cut his sack off and get him breathing) and I hate that he is now staying hidden and I never get to see him. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Just to add, I'm not wanting to force the issue with him. Just wondering if there are things I should be doing to maybe get him used to smell of the pup or anything. The last thing I would ever want to do is stress him out, like I said, this cat is my heart!

Had the same problem, but when i got a kitten and my other cat (as big as yours, and not fat either) didn't like the new one at all. Just let them get use to each other. It's just a "phase". It's like when you have let's say 3 kids, and the younger one is use to being the youger one, with the affection and attention, it makes him feel special, now he sees he wasn't that special after all. They will get along better, but they're always might be some "tension" and "jealousy" between them.

first of all generally cats are not familiar with dogs.
but u can try this
u just tie ur lab and ur cat in a SAFE distance(such that they cannot touch each other) in a closed room for may be 1 to 3hr

u can just do this regularly so that after some days both ur pet get to know each other

bye

just leave them alone, they will work it out, it will only make matters worse if you try to interfere, just give them time
