I used Carnation Good Start with all 4 of my girls. I started out breastfeeding but my milk dried up after 3-6 weeks. ( Underlying medical problems we didn't know of). It was the closest formula that I could find that had "almost" the same quality of breast milk. My girls are now 12 ( she is taller than me!) 10 (following her older sister's footsteps in height) 7 and 4. Best advice is to talk it over with your child's pediatrician or to a WIC worker ( who is also a nutritionist.) Best Wishes.

They all are highly processed and taste like crap. Human milk from the breast is best, followed by human milk in a bottle, then another mother's milk and finally, formula at the breast via a device like a Lact-Aid or SNS.

Myth #13. Modern formulas are almost the same as breastmilk.

Not true! The same claim was made in 1900 and before. Modern formulas are only superficially similar to breastmilk. Every correction of a deficiency in formulas is advertised as an advance. Fundamentally, formulas are inexact copies based on outdated and incomplete knowledge of what breastmilk is. Formulas contain no antibodies, no living cells, no enzymes, no human hormones. They contain much more aluminum, manganese, cadmium, lead and iron than breastmilk. They contain significantly more protein than breastmilk. The proteins and fats are fundamentally different from those in breastmilk. Formulas do not vary from the beginning of the feed to the end of the feed, or from day 1 to day 7 to day 30, or from woman to woman, or from baby to baby. Your breastmilk is made as required to suit your baby. Formulas are made to suit every baby, and thus no baby. Formulas succeed only at making babies grow well, usually, but there is more to breastfeeding than nutrients.

Here if you are not breastfeeding they send you home with enfamil formula. I consider this to be a very good source if you can not breastfeed. Although, every baby is different and may need a different formula depending on that baby.

In the US, I found my daughter worked best with Enfamil...it was better tasting than other brands and it worked best with her (I also breastfed) We also tried similac and Carnation good start, which was, I believe, the first ever baby formula. The carnation one was supposed to be easier to digest, but it made our baby constipated! Doesn't seem easier to digest, does it?

In the UK, the only one I would consider using again was Cow and Gate...SMA is supposedly the most popular one, but I wouldn't feed a cat that junk!

All baby formula manufacturers in the US have to adhere to strict FDA guidelines. Nutritionally, they are all so similar that the only relevant factor is how well your baby likes it. Try different brands - even the cheap ones - and see what is better tolerated.

I used Similac Advance when my daughter was an infant. She is happy and healthy so I guess formula is just as good as breast milk.

The one that is best for your baby. Ask a health professional (Registered Nurse or Doctor) Don't ask a pharmacist as they just try to sell you the most expensive one
