The hijab is required by Islam------------no one has an issue with this. Some of my Orthodox Jewish women friends cover their heads, too. But, the covering of the face is not required by Islam and is a cultural thing from some Muslim areas.
When people move to another cultural area, there must be give and take on the part of both sides. Because of the way of today's world, covering the face in public is not a good idea--------------no matter who you are.

Muslims are not forced to change their civilization by the West. I am an American and live in the US. We Christian Americans just don't like war and terrorist attacks, and no offence to all the people because I know there is good and bad in all races and cultures, but the attacks always seem to be coming from the Middle East. We never get attacked by Germany, Great Britain, France, Mexico, Italy or any of those, but in the last 10 years or more, there was troops getting sent to Saudi Arabia for "operation desert storm", then it was Bin Laden and his games, and the list goes on. Also, we don't care what you do in your country as far as dress goes with scarves, veil, etc. There are some ignorant Americans that make a big deal of it, but the dress code is really not the issue.

I think this is a simplistic question since "Muslims" like "Christians" or "Jews" is by definition a generalization.
However, Muslims will eventually change their societies to resemble the West. As a cultural evolutionary step, the division of society into secular and religious is inevitable for progress and integration into a global society.
Without this division, countries that interact with societies around the world will tend to be closed off and xenophobic. The advent of global economies requires tolerance and understanding. This is not the first thing that comes to mind in a Theocracy no matter what religion is behind it.
The affairs of state are best left up to those committed to fair representation of all citizens regardless of their faith. Religion is a matter best left to the individual to decide freely and without undo influence by their system of government.

Stop and think. Are we rioting because of cartoons of Bush or Jesus? Of course not. Did we fly planes into buildings full of civilians? Of course not. Can children go to public schools and wear scarves, get accomodation from phys ed during Ramadan, of course? So what is it you are complaining about? You seem to have no beef at all with us. The United States could well have reacted to Muslims after 9/11 the way that this country did against the Japanese Americans during the Second World War. We have learned that group guilt is wrong. We did not round up the usual suspects after 9/11, even if it meant some bad guys got away. For the time being. But I do agree with the answerers who said if you don't love this country, find one you do love and go there. God Bless America. If you want to join us, regardless of your race, beliefs or national origin, you will be accepted here. Knowledge of baseball and football helps.

Scarves, veils and burqas are out of place in our western culture just as our style of dress and our customs would be out of place in the middle east. If you choose to live in the west then adapt to the ways of the west. If you don't want to do that then have a nice visit and then go home.

So if I, who does not wear a veil in America, went to a Muslim country where a woman must wear a veil, should I then expect that country to accommodate me, or, if by choosing to live in that country, should I respect their laws and culture.
America is the the great melting pot of the world, where people from all over the world bring their customs with them to enjoy freedom. But I think that freedom is abused sometimes and America is then ridiculed for not adapting to every culture who comes here instead of that culture adapting to America. I'm sure you are not being forced to live in this free country.
If you look at the history of this country, only outlaws hid their faces. You need to accept America for what it is and obey and respect it's laws. They were established for a reason.

In what western country are Muslims being forced to change their civilization? Why do you come to the West and try to change ours? You enjoy the freedoms of the West that your own Muslim countries do not allow but then complain because we do not agree with or wish to convert to your religion and culture. If all these Muslim countries are so great why are so many Muslims flocking to the West?

They're not forced to change at all .. but refusing to remove your scarves and burkhas when passing through airport security .. and threatening officials when they barr wearing these items - after terrorists kill and wound people, and then hide behind such clothing and disappearing into the crowd
- is NOT a matter of "oppressing" your "civilazation".. it is a question of protecting national security, caused by the decisions YOUR fanatics have made .. forcing us to make the choices of whether or not to protect our people!!
Get a grip, and quit whining like a Liberal!! You know as well well as I do - that if we were to go to Muslim countries demanding the same "rights" you demand here - that they would be beheading people left, right and center!!

as of right now only france is FORCING anyone to change..... but western people have trouble accepting anything that is not of them....
this is especially silly in the U.S. b/ its culture is made up of the cultures of its many different immigrants
ps.... unless they allowed for a female guard to search in a
private area.... airport security cannot force you to take off your scarf
EDIT: redeemed, you're right you should respect their LAWS.....the laws in most western countries entitle freedom of religion which is why muslim women are entitled to their hijab.....
