Just a theory: in wars it was easier to wear a helm with short hair.

I've always figured that long hair on women is a traditional thing. Women have ALWAYS had long hair in many different countries in many different societies in many different time periods. Part of that, I think, is for attracting men and as a small vanity.
As for why men "should" have short hair... that's actually a fairly modern thing. Through most of time, common men had longer hair, though soldiers have nearly always had shorter hair. That may be a strategic move in battle; don't want the other side to grab you by your pony tail and slit your throat. Even during the era of the American Civil War, most men had longer hair. Then suddenly, it was the civilized thing to have shorter hair on men and, next thing you know, any man with hair past the top of their ears is a hippie.
IMHO, its a classic case of fashion becoming the norm until it just becomes something most people don't question. Now, it's completely acceptable for girls to have shorter hair, but most keep it to a bob and no short. Men can have longer hair, though they are still generally teased, especially by the older generation, about needing a haircut.

It's all just a matter of personal preference. We have short hair and guys such as it. And i prefer a person with short hair over a man with long hair because long curly hair tends to make guys look also girly.

because ever since the beginning of society thats how it was. It is accepted and generalized in society that girls have long hair and boys have short hair. Now, people dont want to be mistaken for the other gender so they ensure that they fit the gender stereotype

I have long hair but by choice, I like my long blond locks :) But my best friend has a really short trendy hairstyle and she looks great with short hair! Each to their own I say. I don't think in this day and age is expected for a girl to have long hair and for a boy to have short. Times have changed my friend :)

My hair is short and my boyfriend's is long.
Most people insist on long hair for girls and short for guys since that is what is considered acceptable by society, not the other way around. Society (which includes the fashion/entertainment industries) dictates what people wear and how they wear it. But it is by no means a requirement to do so.

Well they don't need too. Like some dudes I see have mullets and wouldn't that count as long hair and some girls have short hair too. And for what you said, I guess its just a way of life.
