A very good way to improve your word choice is by reading. A very good way to improve your conversations is by listening to music and singing to it, this way you'll become more familiar with the language, also more fluent.

What my Japanese exchange student used to do was firstly she would watch an English movie without subtitles at all. Then she would watch it again with subtitles so she could fully understand it and then she'd try watching it again without subtitles so that she roughly knew the meaning but was also listening for the English.
Listening skills greatly help with your speaking which is why I was giving advice on that and frankly, when you can understand television English, you're doing very very well. Next, it's important to be practicing your English with a native speaker as much as you can. If you can, try and get an English speaking exchange student to come and stay with you, or vice versa. I had a Japanese girl come and stay with me for about 6 months and I have to say that my Japanese greatly improved. My Japanese teacher certainly noticed. My speed, vocabulary and grammar all drastically increased to the point where I've only learnt about one or two new things in the last year of Senior Japanese.
Seriously, living with a native speaker is your best bet so try and get an exchange student to come and live with you or try and live with a native speaker as an exchange student yourself.

Try to watch more english movie, with sub-title so at least u can understand what they r trying to say. Need not have to speak slang if u'r an Asian. (Just b urself) As long as the person know what's u'r saying, that's good enough. Frankly i'm from a Hokkien family, since i am young, no english for me, during school time, i am not baised but just don't dare to mix with other races except only chinese. During my high school, my math teacher is a malay, Gosh! I told myself i am dead this time. Whenever he ask me quest., i am just like a mute. Classmates teased & laughed at me. But gradually, I told myself i gto overcome it & my teacher know hokkien. So after school remedial, he communicate w me in hokkien while i gto use English. This is how i learn my lanuage, so do you. Good luck! U never try u never know. =)

First, speak all you can with English-speaking people. Second, LISTEN....Listen to what they say. When you don't understand a phrase, ask what it means. I have some Romanian friends (I do not speak their language, but they speak English, at least to a point). Anyway, when they hear a phrase or "saying" they don't understand, they ask me, and I explain it to them. You might try the same with a friend who is fluent in English....Best to you :) :)

You can start off by reading, watching tv, speaking to people and asking friends & families to correct you on your grammers when you speak incorrect. That's how I learned English when I first came to U.S. and now I am fluent.

I have heard that by learning and singing with some music you enjoy you will memorize words and you will forget your learning. You can enjoy just following the beat as you sing. That will help it flow better when you speak.
