First and formost stop wasting, start using bio degradable things, Try to reuse what ever u can. Plant a tree atleast one for your birthday every year and one for every person u love and save it so as it becomes big and doesnt die due to neglect.

We city people and especially once who have good earning waste a lot and our village and forest dwellers pay for it. If we start saving and change our habit it will be most useful. Indian culture has always revolved around nature, saving, conserving and like but our habits have changed and we have started misusing wasting and distructing which we should stop at once.

Some thing we can do are:
1 Stop any waste of water - remember every drop is precious.
2 Stop waste of Electricity - Turn off anything you are not using.
3 Stop wasting fuel: Our vehicles are the biggest polluters.
4 BE GREEN: USE ONLY BIODEGRADABLE MATERIALS AND STOP WASTING.

Along with the helpful responses...
Be more vegetarian... eat organic if you find it or at least things that still look the way they were grown (not processed is what I'm saying), drink water and organic juice or coffee or teas (fair trade items are good too). Buy bulk food items like dry beans or rice etc. (less packaging)
Buy nice clothes at second hand stores (yes there are nice things there)
Go to the library and borrow books on this topic... or buy and recycle great magazines like "Mother Earth News" or "Vegetarian Times" they always have easy, helpful tips for doing things at home that help the environment and helps save money.
Don't poison your grass or garden with pesticides and herbicides there are 'greener' alternatives.
Reduce or eliminate gas powered devices... lawnmower, weed eater, leaf blower.
It's a start. Make it a challenge to find out more on your own...I've been at it for years and it's very satisfying.

If we can develop better civic sense, then we all stop detroying this world we live in. Good civic sense should be taught at grassroot school level. This then should be reinforced with strict law. At personal level we should try to pollute as less as possible. But what can we do at the destruction at higher levels? Traveeling between Delhi and Dehradun often at night, I saw everyday at least 10 tractors fully loaded with logs plying freely right under the nose of police. They are destroying the hills. everyone is invoved in this mindless destruction -- from mafia to politicians and police. And it still goes on unabatted.
