The Watchtowers represent the Guardian Spirits and the Elements where they abide.

Here is a pretty good site.

Invokeing a watchtower is just like invokeing an elemental, the proceedure is the same. a Watchtower is more of a planet based system of calling the directions and elementals with them, thus you would invoke "Mars, watchtower of the South" for fire so go get your big book 'o associations look up the planets that match your directions/elements and go on from there and write your own invocation. Have fun & remember you dont need other's stuff your own has more power anyway!

some of that depends on which sect of Wicca you belong to. yes we have separations also.
As to your question. you are invoking the guardians of the watch towers of the North, East, south, West and back to North. which is the direction that the alter is placed in.As to wither you use the cardinal directions or the magnetic one is a matter of preference and space.
As you are starting to build the circle of protection. it depends on what the coven agrees on as to where you start from the north or the East. Most use East as it is were the sun rises from and work your way around clockwise stopping at each quarter and invoking the Guardians of each watch tower in turn.and back to were you started to close the circle. reverse the order to open it when done thanking each Guardian for their help.
The circle has to be big enough to fit and let the coven move around in without crossing the boundaries of the circle.

This question can get sticky. A lot depends on the particular tradition of Wicca is being used. There is no one good answer to this question without knowing more about what group was using the term.

from my understanding this is actually one of your very basic type things... like right after casting a circle.

you'll want to learn ALOT more before you go getting into things.

another interesting trivia is that many people see the watchtowers as correlating to the 4 Archangels of Judeochristian lore.

it's just the same thing as calling the four corners(north south east west)--there are tons of procedures, all very simple, and it's easy to come up with something on your own too
