Red's right. The metal will look best in your mouth. Even if it doesn't actually "show," it will show through the gums.

MOSTLY, though, the bond between porcelain and gold is generally much better than the bond between porcelain and base metals. You are much more likely to have a porcelain fracture on a base metal crown. And I mean MUCH more likely.

As far as the profit motive, MOST dentists only reflect the difference in the cost of the metals in their final fee. I would not profit any more by using a gold crown than a base metal crown. In fact, most of the time, my "margin" is lower on a gold crown.

Go with 'Red' and Dr Sam above. I am adding a little bit more here. Gold crowns give the most precise fit of all crown types since gold is an extremely workable metal. The preparation of a tooth for a gold crown is the simplest and least complicated preparation since there is minimal tooth structure removal. This allows for a large portion of the healthy tooth structure to remain untouched. Gold crowns also (are neighborhood friendly) do not cause any wear on opposing teeth over time. There is no possibility of chipping and they offer a healthier environment for the gum tissue.

Honest dentists make less money when doing gold crowns! The esthetic concerns should be addressed only when anterior teeth are involved, for which further expensive option of metal free all ceramic/porcelain crowns may be considered.

In terms of lasting, FGC (full gold crown) tend to last a few years longer. Most crowns should last you around 10-15 years sometimes even 20. If it is a back molar that you cant see when you smile, I would get the Gold. If you can see it, I would get the PFM (proclien fused to metal) that one is tooth colored, and no one will ever notice it.

A gold crown is more durable for a tooth that bears a lot of pressure like a molar. A gold crown may be overkill on any other type of tooth.

My husband actually had better luck with the metal base. But most dentist will tell you that a gold base is better. Of course it cost more, so that could be why they suggest it more often.

Mine is titanium. It is the strongest metal and doesn't leave toxins in your body like fillings that contain mercury. It is actually a post in there, if that is what you mean by "base:. Now days they can paint it with "tooth color" so that it doesn't look dark through the crown if it is a front tooth.

no gold is softer than most metals and depending on the type it would bend easier and as jewlers say "everyday you wear gold a little is given back to the earth"
