Because people are ignorant and don't know what they're talking about. They don't do any research about us, they just hear stuff from other people that's 99% un-true. Ok, it's like this...why would u ask your dentist what kind of hairstyle to get instead of asking your hairstylist? (I owe that bit of reasoning to NSL. A big thanks to u) All people ever get is biased opinions because they're too afraid to ask us themselves.
ckrug: We do recognize Jesus as the Son of God
calnickel: This is a common misconception. There are 144,000 going to rule as kings and priests in heaven with Jesus, the rest, will inherit the earth and "reside forever upon it." Psalms 37:29
Courtney B: We are a religion. If you look in your local phone book under churches...we're listed...sorry we're not under cult. We have 6.5 million baptised servants of Jehovah world-wide....in 230+ lands and in dozens of languages.
We go door to door because that's what the Bible says to do, and in so doing, we are following Jesus' example. (Luke 4:43; Matthew 20:28; Romans 10:14,15; Matthew 24:14)

You really shouldnt expect good answers to this question here.
Most Bible believing Christians believe they are a cult because of their interpretation of the bible.
Christians believe in a literal translation and Jehovahs Witnesses believe in a Symbolic translation where it is convienient to match their beliefs.
JW's believe that only 144,000 people will go to heaven.
and that those 144k will be JW's but we all know there are millions of JW's where do the rest go? JW's believe they will be part of the great crowd. which is not biblical.
Christians understand that the book of revelation is speaking of this number as converted jews during the tribulation period.
there are a whole host of other reasons not least is their belief about the Trinity (they reject the teaching of the Nicean Council)
pretty basic stuff really.
The Watchtower Society (”Gods Organization”) predicted the end of the world would come in 1914, 1915, 1918, 1921, 1925, 1932, 1941 and 1975. it didnt happen, They lied.
Question: Who is the father of the lie?
You may want to read this website, it will help you understand what christians think about Jehovah's Witnesses.
You may not agree with them but that is what they think.

The word "cult" has come to mean different things to different people. Today it seems to be used mostly as an insult in reference to various religious organizations that are small, different, or generally despised by larger, more "mainstream" groups.
The Oxford English Dictionary defines cult as: "worship; reverential homage rendered to a divine being or beings; a particular form or system of religious worship; especially in reference to its external rites and ceremonies; devotion or homage to a particular person or thing."
This is a generally positive definition, being the historical meaning of the word, but it is rarely today used outside of religious discussion.
The New Testament "Christians" undoubtedly would have been classified as a cult by most of the people who use the term today. The church was widely spoken against by the religious establishment of that day (Acts 28:22).
It is best to look to the Bible itself for guidance in seeking out and proving which is the true church described in Scripture. Once one knows which church is indeed the one God raised up, then there is no danger of being lured into the various man-made religions of this world.
Now that you know the definition, you must search your heart and the scriptures to see if the organization that you are talking about is seeking truth. For it is truth that will set you free.
May you enjoy the adventure of finding that Truth.

I believe they are a cult because they do not really believe in the Christendom. They believe that Jehovah Witnesses, and only Jehovah Witnesses are going to heaven. Some of their leaders have tried to predict the exact date of when Jesus is coming back and failed every time. My history teacher told me that the main reason a cult is called a cult is because there are not enough people that follow it to be considered a "religion."

Many people also say that the Mormon religion is a cult and that pagans and Scientologists follow a cult. I think that any belief or way of doing things that is not "mainstream" in it's teachings is branded as a cult. There are many narrow minded people in the world and you don't have to concern yourself with folks like that.

the problem here is not that Jehovahs Witnesses are considered a cult but that many people do not know what hte word cult actually means.
right now i'm a religious studies major and this is something i just learned about
a cult is actually only a religion that split form its mother faith to put more focus on a specific belief or practice. take a look at this list of definitions:
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/cult
i know society has given this word a negative connotation but that does not mean their is anything wrong with you parents faith

We've heard that they are indoctrinated ... not encouraged to study and discuss what the Bible means; rather, taught from "head office" so they can quote the Watch Tower version.
Also, because the historic traditional belief is that Jesus Christ is the Eternal God; JWs seem to consider that Jesus is some "lesser" God.
Titus 2:13 says we are looking for the blessed hope, the glorious appearing of our Great God and Saviour Jesus Christ. The Rev. John Wesley commented on that passage to the effect that IF there were greater and lesser Gods, then this passage clearly teaches that Jesus Christ is the GREAT GOD AND SAVIOUR.

because it is a very religious/spiritual organization that has totally left out the fact that God sent HIS SON to die for our sins, that HIS SON rose from the dead, and HIS SON is going to return. i've been to kingdom's hall many years before with my aunt and was repulsed when she made the comment that wearing a cross is the same thing as wearing a little electric chair around your neck. No, that cross is what has saved me from sin and hell. Everything in the Old Testament pointed to Christ, the New Testament is the gospel of Christ, so what exactly do the JWs not understand?
John 14:6 Jesus said to him, I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life; no one comes to the Father but by Me.

The true definition of a cult is any organization with more than one member. As Christianity took over there was a need to separate "us' from "them" so cult took on a derogatory meaning for any one who wasn't you.

Maybe not a cult, but a wacky religion than has no basis in the Bible.
Jesus did not shun people because they sinned, he helped them. He did not scare people into walking the straight and narrow. He allowed feasting and participated in it and related to it in many of hiis parables. No where in the Bible does it say no blood transfusions. If only 144,000 people get into heaven, why are JW knocking on doors lessening their chances?
The fruit of the JW is rotten.
