From these the coastland peoples spread. These are the sons of Japheth in their lands, each with his own language, by their families, in their nations ... These are the sons of Ham, by their families, their languages, their lands, and their nations ... These are the sons of Shem, by their families, their languages, their lands, and their nations." (Genesis 10:5, 20, 31)

"Now the whole earth had one language and few words. And as men migrated from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there." (Genesis 11:1)

The Bible, and in particular early Genesis is a piecing together of stories from various sources. They are not necessarily chronological, nor consistent.

Shem, Ham, and Japheth were all three sons of Noah who, along with their wives survived the flood. What is really interesting is to research their lifespans to see exactly how long each one lived and how many children they individually had. It took many years for the generations to spread out and although they had different dialects it was still one understandable language until the tower of Babel, where languages were birthed by GOD.

Genesis10:5 do you see the words Isles of the Gentiles(non-Jewish people).Big clue.
Start at genesis 10:1 and write a family tree and it will become clear to you as to what is being said. you are doing the same as other people picking only those parts that fit with what you want to believe.
Reading ALL of the verses from the begining of the two chapters you are quioting from will give you your answer.
I take it you used the KJV for this question.
